I understand where Anne Lamott and George Dila are coming from when it comes to writing their first drafts. Anne Lamott says just write what comes to mind and don’t care if the writing comes out horribly because no one will see it either way. Meanwhile, George Dila is more of a perfectionist and prefers to edit as he writes his first draft. But I personally tend to write more like Anne Lamott. I write whatever comes to mind and exactly how I think it. Sometimes I only think about what I want to write, and I end up not writing it and forget about it, which can be frustrating. Sometimes I use Dila’s method if I have a lot of time on my hands and can consistently read over what I write. But if I am in a rush for some reason then, I just write and don’t look back. I don’t agree with the analogy Dila mentioned. He compared Lamott’s method of a first draft to building a house. They are pretty different and incomparable because it would be much easier to edit a draft than fix a house.
