IBM is an information technology company that operates in 177 countries around the world. They have recently entered the field of cloud computing which is when you access information from an external database. An example of this is when we use Gmail. Gmail isn’t run on our computers but instead the data is grabbed from Google’s servers. This is one of the reasons Gmail is a lot faster to pull up compared to other email websites that don’t use cloud computing such as Yahoo. Cloud computing makes it so that our computers have to do less with the data being stored outside the individual computer and programs being shared. This is very useful to share information fast with everything being on a single platform. This however isn’t the case as the leading cloud computing companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon each have their separate cloud and data transfer between clouds is difficult. IBM in it’s acquisition of Red Hat is hoping to be able to compete with these giants in this field. They hope to make allow people to have the ability to make their own cloud for their personal use and access to a public cloud. The combination of these companies hopefully brings a new era of cloud computing.

Well it’s all fun and games, however, the biggest problem is security. Many people expect security to be the top priority, and the collection of all the data in one place poses a threat. In addition to that, if there would be public cloud that would mean that everyone has access to it and that it would have to be stored locally. In addition to that, there would be even a greater risk to the privacy because everyone would have access to it.

Technology is amazing and so advanced that we can access our data from anywhere we want as long as we have a computer/smartphone. The only issue with this is how vulnerable our data can be. There has been many cases where the cloud data got hacked and released which proves how privacy is a joke when it comes to the internet.
