Although most of the meatpacking district has changed, there are still efforts to help maintain the district’s past history. The Meatpacking District Improvement Association was created to help maintain the districts historical quality. The Association in certain cases will deem areas as landmarks, and not allow any reconfiguration or construction . While most businesses from the past disappeared, there are still the few butcher shops, and restaurants that are around from the earlier days of the meatpacking district. Furthermore, many buildings where these new stores are opening up, are keeping the original structures. By keeping the original structures, people can still see the past of the district, even though the original store is no longer there.
