Displacement Post #2

https://www.unhcr.org/news/latest/2016/11/581f52dc4/frequently-asked-questions-climate-change-disaster-displacement.html

This is a photograph from the UN Refugee Agency of kids from Bangladesh. This demonstrates children migrating due to the rising sea levels in their homes. This is the case for many people around the world. Weather and natural disasters are something we have no control of and because of this, there are many people that get displaced from their homes. The term for this is called “Climate Refugee”. Those that have to leave their countries face many difficultites like culture, language, laws, and etc. This also creates problems with the residents of the place that they are moving to. Climate Refugees are very common and it is something that can’t be prevented. The best thing to do is to make regulations and emergency plans to prepare for the future disasters.

Tibetans Can’t Speak their Native Language in Tibet

https://freetibet.org/news-media/na/tibetan’s-hit-out-against-lack-tibetan-language-local-courts

Since 1959, Tibet has been under the rule of the Chinese government. China has taken control of every aspect of the life of the Tibetan people in Tibet. This includes education, government, economy, language, culture and etc. The article “Tibetans PUSH BACK AGAINST THE LACK OF TIBETAN LANGUAGE IN LOCAL COURTS” speaks upon how some Tibetan people don’t understand the Chinese language and are unable to understand the policies and legal information. This is because of the lack of usage of the Tibetan language in the documents, proclamations, and announcements that the Chinese government publishes. The people of Tibet are forced to speak the Chinese language but the government has not reached all the regions. Therefore, to those that haven’t learned the Chinese language are unable to understand the rights that the new government has established. This demonstrates displacement because the Tibetans feel displaced in their home country. To not be able to speak your mother tongue in your home country can create a sense of displacement. When you are being forced to forget your language, culture, traditions and being told that you can’t praise your religious leader; you’re human rights are being stolen. No one should have to face this, everyone deserves Human rights.

Interpreter of Maladies

The “Interpreter of Maladies” was an interesting story. My initial thought was that it would be a boring story about a family visiting a country with a tour guide. However, it was more than that. The author reveals the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Das and Mrs. Das’s relationship with Mr.Kapasi. The author highlights the tension between the married couple and the lack of love and compassion that they have. I thought that it was very vivid about how the couple felt about each other. With this conflict, Mrs. Das shows interest to Mr. Kapasi which I thought was weird, especially with their cultural norms. When Mrs. Das tells Mr. Kapasi about her son not being Mr. Das’s, it felt very strange. Why would you reveal that to someone that is not very close to you? The author portrays Mrs. Das as very elegant, oblivious and inappropriate. Mrs. Das taking Mr.Kapasi’s information and flirting with him while being with her children felt very uncomfortable. The story concludes with Bobby being attacked by monkeys and Mrs. Das screams Mr. Kapasi’s name. I thought this was very interesting because her husband was with her as well.

Personal Narrative Ideas

  1. A place that is meaningful to me is Tibet. It is my country but I have never been there and I am no longer allowed to enter.
  2. I have a transformational experience with language both Tibetan and English. I  struggle because of the linguistic mode because I think and reflect in both languages.
  3. A time where I felt displaced was when I came to America from India. Not being able to speak the language and not knowing the customs was very difficult.

Shadow Cities

1. Andre Aciman talks about his ritual of going to Straus park because it reminds him of the hidden cities, what are these cities? Is it the cities from back home?
2. Is Aciman being in exile related to the idea of displacement? How?
3.  How does Aciman’s attachment to the park allow him to cope with New York?
