The “Interpreter of Maladies” was an interesting story. My initial thought was that it would be a boring story about a family visiting a country with a tour guide. However, it was more than that. The author reveals the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Das and Mrs. Das’s relationship with Mr.Kapasi. The author highlights the tension between the married couple and the lack of love and compassion that they have. I thought that it was very vivid about how the couple felt about each other. With this conflict, Mrs. Das shows interest to Mr. Kapasi which I thought was weird, especially with their cultural norms. When Mrs. Das tells Mr. Kapasi about her son not being Mr. Das’s, it felt very strange. Why would you reveal that to someone that is not very close to you? The author portrays Mrs. Das as very elegant, oblivious and inappropriate. Mrs. Das taking Mr.Kapasi’s information and flirting with him while being with her children felt very uncomfortable. The story concludes with Bobby being attacked by monkeys and Mrs. Das screams Mr. Kapasi’s name. I thought this was very interesting because her husband was with her as well.
