- Item X is very interesting to me. It basically means that since women are allowed to be executed, they should also be allowed to make speeches, as long the speech doesn’t break the law. I find it interesting because it makes me realize the extent of women’s oppression during this time in France.
- Olympe de Gouges and Mary Wollstonecraft seem to saying that marriage is something that is not really beneficial to women as it makes them like slaves. In regards to their concerns, I make that they are very important since it shows people that there is a clear inequality between husband and wife. Since women had to do housework, they were financially dependent on their husbands– which is why women most likely stayed married in spite of the clear inequality.
- Reading these two 18th century texts in the 21st century is very motivating since it shows that in spite of women’s oppression (especially being in other country) they were willing to fight for their rights, which has a big impact on today since women have more rights than before. One issue addressed in the text that I would say is still relevant today is women needing to be financially dependent on their husband. In some cultures (like mine– South Asian), women are seen as “maids” while men are seen as the money maker.
