Paola Modernism Assignment

  • Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, ceramicist born in 1881. Before the age of 50, he had become one of the most well-known artists in modern art. Throughout his lifetime, Pablo Picasso created over 20,000 works of art including paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Pablo Picasso worked alongside Georges Braque with co-founding the entire cubist movement. Picasso died at the age of 91 in 1973 and has become one of the most famous and successful artists in the history of art.

For this modernism assignment, I decided to choose a cubism piece created by Pablo Picasso. The painting is called “Woman in a Chemise in an Armchair” created in Paris, late 1913-1914. The painting I chose represents a woman seated in a purple armchair with one arm raised while the other arm is holding a newspaper. In this painting, Picasso includes references to other painters such as Jean Auguste Dominque Ingres and sculptors of Fang and Baule.

This work reflects the aesthetic preferences associated with modernism because it’s a cubist painting by Pablo Picasso. This piece has a great amount of different shapes and the way their put together to create this woman in an armchair. This picture depicts how woman in society are sexualized and objective as this painting is said to be a sexualized piece of woman in art culture today.

I encountered this piece of art by Pablo Picasso in the MET museum. I was drawn to this piece because out of all the works of art in modernism, the one that caught my eye the most was the cubism pieces. In my opinion cubism shows a great amount of creativity by the artist. Pablo Picasso has been one of my favorite painters of all time and seeing his creativity in his art pieces amazes me greatly. After doing some research on the potential paintings I would do this assignment on, I knew I had to it on a piece by Pablo Picasso after finding out he helped found the cubism movement. I liked this art piece based on the patterns and colors to create the woman in the armchair.

This is an amazing example of Cubism. I love the challenge of looking at the painting and “finding” the woman and the armchair. The way that Picasso has sort of deconstructed the image is so interesting!
