“Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger”

What kind of person is Li Jia? Does his behavior at the end of the story come as a surprise? Why or why not?

In this story, Li Jia is portrayed as heartless, ungrateful, greedy, and a big disgrace of being a man. My reason for describing Li Jia in this way is because, after everything that he and Du Tenth had been through from the Northern capital, he never realized that Du Tenth was always standing by him and encouraging him whenever he had lost hope in himself. Firstly, Du Tenth was not concern about Li Jia having money or not, although he was at the point of his life where he did not have money, but she asked him to take her as his wife, in other words, Du Tenth tried as much to prove her love to him, but he did not see it that way. In addition, Li Jia behavior at the end of the story came as a surprise to me, his decision at the end of the story with Sun Fu did not make any sense by trading Du Tenth for a thousand taels, this simply shows that he never had feelings for her at all and was willing to do anything to get money.

In conclusion to this beautiful story, the focal point surrounding this story is all about Love and Money. In my opinion, the key point in this story is TRUST, this story is also a lesson on how we should treat people that are part of our lives.

  1. Hi Charles!

I also agree Li Jia was a greedy and disgraceful man. I love how you brought up that he could never truly appreciate what he had, which was Du Tenth even though she tried so hard to prove her love for him. I also agree with you that his actions at the end of trying to trade Du Tenth for money shows that he did not have true feelings for her and that money was more important. I would also add that the approval of his father and the guarantee to his family’s fortune was far more important to Li Jia than Du Tenth ever was to him.

If the theme is trust, what is the message that Feng Menglong is conveying about trust?
