Moliere, Tartuffe Response
Describe the character of Orgon. Why do you think he’s so vulnerable to Tartuffe?
Orgon is the head of the household in the family that the drama focuses upon. However, ironically Orgon doesn’t seem to have a legitimate authority since everyone in the family doubts him and Tartuffe. In fact, Orgon is basically a sheep being herded by Tartuffe since he goes to any length to please Tartuffe. Orgon’s relationship with Tartuffe is basically Moliere’s criticism of the relationship between the Monarchy and the Church in France during this period. The French Monarch seemed to take the advise of the Church more than his own subjects even though most of the Church’s advice come in conflict with the interest of the public. Orgon’s relationship with Tartuffe can be seen the same way. Orgon takes everything that Tartuffe says seriously. He tries his best to please Tartuffe believing that if he can please a “pious” man then God will be pleased with him. However, Tartuffe is a hypocrite. He is not a pious person nor is he religious. Everything that Tartuffe apparently preaches, he himself does the opposite which contradict his preaches. During this period, the catholic church of France had the same level of hypocrisy as Tartuffe, they paid less taxes, got more favor from the king and seemed to hold a lot of wealth even though the church preaches for modesty. Hence, Orgon is basically a blind king in his own family who is being controlled by the hypocrite Tartuffe.

Intro
Hello fellow classmates! My name is Brian. I am a sophomore striving for an MBA in finance. A few fun facts about me are that I used to play soccer, hockey, and professionally did kick boxing for 8 eight years. My current hobbies are playing video games, playing basketball with friends, going to parties on the weekend, and occasionally driving up to the Poconos for a relaxing time away from the stress of education and drama. At this time I am undertaking a paid internship at a CPA firm in Brooklyn. My boss is great; since I am one of two of his employees, I get paid lunch and he pretty much always orders whatever I want into the office. My parents immigrated to Brooklyn from Ukraine when they were beginning high school, and have stayed ever since. They always pretend to not care about my academics, but always get incredibly overprotective if something is going wrong and go out of their way to aid me through anything I am in need of.
I have always been pressured into being a doctor or lawyer (much like 90% of millennials). I discovered my love for numbers and math somewhere in middle school; I decided to dedicate myself into finance for that reason. A couple months into researching the fields of finance, accounting and business, I realized that there actually isn’t that much math involved, which came as a relief because I wasn’t in the mood to buy every new model of calculators for $100+ every year. On a more serious note, I was getting slightly overwhelmed in my honors calculus class in my first semester of college. Finding out theres more to finance than just math and numbers gave me a feeling of reassurance.
Looking deeper into my college career, I am excite to dive into the tougher levels of my major. I may end up switching to a major in Accounting and attempt to attack the CPA exam. Either way, I am set to get my MBA as that is one of the major recommended requirements in any financial institution today. Thank you for your time!
