Kai Althoff

Kai Althoff´s work overall did not have a central theme or specific art style in my opinion. It had some of everything. I would sometimes find it hard to determine what is intentional in regards to placement and what was just placed randomly. I feel like the positioning was sometimes the art more than the creation as some of the stuff in the gallery was purchased, some had the price tag still attached. Some looked like very simple to draw sketches while others looked like photos, one of which looked similar to Brad Pitt. In the very back, there were two large dolls facing each other with a mirror in front of the mom doll and the son standing above it with a damaged face. The obvious idea of the mom not seeing or intentionally neglecting the son is easy to spot but there might be more to it. There was also a large board with a lot of themes mostly written in German. It was in reference to the holocaust period and it showed a German citizen watching propaganda on his television. A quarter of the board was also devoted to sexual preferences but also included “sado” in the list. Another quarter had a drug name, nicotine, and alcohol all written on it. One of the drawn works that caught my attention was the man stabbing himself in the back, he had slashed a large portion of his back but it was also not clear as to the meaning behind it as there was not much background if i recall correctly.

The Hour of the Star

EDIT: I misread the date on the syllabus so I ended up writing this on the wrong story

Does the narrator actually know this girl or is he just writing the story of someone he randomly saw and made up a story for?

The narrator never mentions actually meeting this girl.
