MOMA

Taking the first step into the exhibition already gave an atmosphere of unease. The ominous music was creepy, pairing well with the displayed artworks that were equally unsettling. When the music changed into the audio of someone just laughing made the experience even more scary. The only thing I can get out of the exhibition was that everything seems to be showcasing the world at its worst. When I thought I finally found a pleasant picture of what seemed like children getting ready for a party, it turns out there was one student hiding behind the curtains dressed like a clown. Due to the horror of the displayed artworks, when I saw the display of two dolls on the ground in the corner, my natural thought was that they were dead rather than they were simply drunk or sleeping. Being in the exhibition diminished my hope so much that I just did not think anything good was going to happen.

There were many impressionable artworks due to their gruesome nature, one featuring a man dragging a knife down his own back, another where a man’s legs seemed to be in reverse and parts of his bones could be seen, a display where the lonely doll was situated on a couch with a box of bugs spilling out next to her, and the display of a half body mother hanging onto her son. Although I am unsure about the definite connection of all the artworks, it is easy to tell these artworks display the worst in humanity and the demons of society.

Does the narrator have the existential crisis that he portrays in Macabea? Why else would he constantly have to talk about himself and his stance rather than actually starting the story?

Doesn’t Barn Burning by William Faulkner contrast what Freud says about little boys replacing their fathers with another being that was “perfect”? The little boy in Barn Burning still held the hope that his father was good man despite all the things his father has done.

Is Septimus really detached or has he just lost his faith in humanity after going through the violence of war and having to see the worst in humanity?

Peter Walsh felt that the community can trust their lives in each other. Isn’t it ironic that seconds later he believes Clarissa and Elizabeth do not get along, isn’t fond of her father or her for that matter?

Personal Lark

Vivian Chan laughed when she headed out of her house to see her friends tread lifelessly down the road, greeting them with a smile that was not welcomed by the other two as one of them said, “It’s too early to be smiling this.” The three then headed towards the Bay Parkway N train station quietly, each listening to their own music as Vivian tried to pull her headphones out of her messy bag. Vivian finally managed to find it but dropped the other things in her bookbag pocket, not realizing she had abandoned a pack of gum behind until someone called out to her. The stranger clad in a thick green coat passed the pack of gum back to the girl. Did she leave her mind back in Sunday?

The train arrives shortly after and the girls board the train. One of Vivian’s friend gets off at a stop earlier to get to her high school while Vivian and her other friend got off the express N train at Union Street to transfer to the local train. The local train was already waiting at the stop. The duo took the train for one stop and got off at 23rd ST. They arrived at Baruch ten minutes later.

With Mrs.Dalloway’s mind drifting between death and how she wishes she has lived her own life rather than for spectators, is it foreshadowing a drastic change in her life that she partakes?
