Welcome to English 2850

Hello! Welcome to English 2850, Great Works of World Literature II. If you are reading this, you have successfully found your way to our course blog. Please bookmark this site. This is where you can find information about the course, copies of all assignments, weekly prompts to accompany our readings, and important announcements.

*****Acquiring the books for the course should be at the top of your “To Do” List. The required textbook for our course is The Norton Anthology of World Literature, Martin Puchner, Ed.,  Third Edition,  Volumes D, E, F.   These three volumes are sold together as a package.  It is crucial that you buy or rent the Third Edition – which is not the most recent one available.  It is much cheaper than the fourth edition, available both new and used,  and contains the readings that you will need for our course.  Please get the books as soon as possible.  You will have reading assignments in the Norton Anthology every week, and you will need to have the text with you in class.

*****Your first assignment is simple.  Create a post on the blog in which you introduce yourself to the class.  It’s up to you what you choose to share in this post, but your introduction should be approximately 350-500 words.  Together with this brief introduction, please take a minute to upload a photograph of yourself to your blogs@baruch account.  This way, your face will replace the default bearcat avatar! Please share your introduction by Friday, February 2nd.

I am really looking forward to meeting you and to beginning our work together! If you have any questions or concerns about the course, please reach out to me at [email protected].

See you in class!

  1. Hello everyone, My name is Tanvier Ahmed, and I am excited to go on a journey with you all for this English 2850 class. As a freshman at Baruch College, I am still getting used to how college life works and what I need to do to properly get adjusted, this marks my second semester at Baruch trying to go for my degree in Computer Information Systems (Cis). Before even going into the world of computer science, I was going into a different field. I had come to Baruch from Aviation High School, and during my time there my whole focus revolved around understanding the intricate components of airplanes and having the knowledge to fix said issues with these aircraft. My high school had this unique opportunity where I would be able to get two incenses in the aviation field which were the powerplant and airframe licenses and this would allow me to get a job in the industry right after high school at companies like Delta Airlines or American Airlines. However, during COVID-19 I had revitalized my desire from back in the day to try for my computer science-related job as that is what I wanted since I was a kid, and my interest in aviation was waning. I wanted to dive into the world of coding, programming, and everything that lies within the vast domain of computer science.
Transitioning from aviation to computer science might have seemed like a significant shift, but it felt like a natural evolution for me. I did find deciphering the mechanics of aircraft interesting, but my immense curiosity for technology and computers was equally profound. I embark on this new chapter, eagerly wanting to merge my foundational knowledge from Aviation High School with the diverse and dynamic field of Cis.
Other than school I enjoy things like Video games and TV shows as this is a constant source of entertainment and inspiration for me and it is nice to be immersed in a story. Playing with my friends online is a nice form of relaxation after a hard day’s work and also helps make good memories for the future.
I am a freshman fueled by curiosity and driven by a deep passion for tech, I am eager to explore the endless possibilities that lie ahead for me. I am hopeful and excited about what I will learn and how I will grow during my time here.

  2. JOAN ROCCO says:

Good afternoon, everybody. It’s truly a pleasure to have this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Joan Rocco, and I come from a charming little town nestled in the picturesque mountains of Florence, Italy. The crisp mountain air and breathtaking landscapes have always been a source of inspiration for me, fueling my deep appreciation for the wonders of the natural world. I chose New York City for its reputation as a global center of finance, envisioning it as the perfect environment to challenge myself academically and personally. The cultural diversity of the city, where different cultures intersect with a thousand nuances, has always fascinated me, and I am eager to explore its rich tapestry further. As a transfer student here at Baruch, I am excited to embark on this new chapter in my academic journey. Having earned an associate’s degree in accounting, my passion for finance and economics drives me to face the complex challenges of the dynamic world of business head-on. Beyond academics, I find immense joy in sports, particularly football. Whenever the weather permits, I eagerly watch FC Internazionale, passionately rooting for my favorite team. Furthermore, my love for exploration knows no limits. Traveling to new destinations fuels my curiosity, and I am particularly drawn to rugged terrain and serene woods. Whether hiking challenging trails, camping under starry skies, or simply walking in the tranquility of nature, I find comfort and inspiration in the embrace of the great outdoors. Additionally, I have cultivated a keen interest in photography, finding immense pleasure in capturing the intricate beauty of the natural world through the lens of my camera.

I am eager and excited to embark on this journey of discovery, growth, and collaboration with each of you.
