Hello Class!
Welcome to English 2100. My goal is to help you to become a more thoughtful, critical thinker and writer. During the course of this semester we will read a variety of text that will often push the boundaries of our sensibilities. That’s a good thing, because here, in our class, we will open our minds to the world beyond our own and discover how we are more alike than different.
I will ask each of you to set aside your inhibitions and preconceived notions to allow for the entry of new ideas and opinions.
Our classroom is a safe haven; meaning that everyone’s opinion is valid. Everyone has a voice. However, to that end, respect–whether we agree or disagree–is paramount.
This course is reading and writing intensive and in order to be successful you must come prepared to work and to share your work with others. Participation is a good percentage of your final grade.
Attendance and punctuality are necessary for you to succeed in the course. When you are absent you miss valuable input that cannot easily be recovered or duplicated. Unless you are ill or have a family emergency it is to your benefit to attend each and every class from beginning to end. Lateness is problematic. Lateness is rude. Lateness is a distraction to me and to your classmates. Please do not be a distraction.
It is not my objective to see you fail. Everyone starts off my class as an A student. I want each of you to succeed. But you will only get as much out of the class as you put in.
With all that said, welcome. I anticipate an exciting and engaging semester and look forward to working with each of you.
