This poem is filled with religious allusions. It speaks of the second coming. (The first one was the birth of Jesus Christ).
It was as if Yeats was having a dream or rather a nightmare in which he is witnessing what is said in the book of Revelations in the Bible but in a twisted way.
He speaks of total chaos which reeks havoc on the world and he recognizes that the world is coming to an end and is deeply troubled as the imagery he sees are very different from what was expected as the second coming of God was to be something glorious and divine.
This poem seems to be merely a re-telling of a very tragic nightmare of Yeats which he found very significant due to his religious background.
The poem seems to be filled with depression and anxiety. It is as if Yeats was going through a period of hopelessness. One who has a conviction of the glorious second coming of the messiah would not affiliate it with devastation but something to rejoice which makes me believe that he is losing his religious faith and also maybe his faith in mankind.
