Childhood Item

This is an ashtray filled with coins. My grandfather had this ashtray filled with coins, and every day, he would call me over to hand me some change so I could go to the “colmado” or bodega and buy snacks for myself. It might sound weird, but this ashtray has sentimental value to me because my grandpa, who passed away, was my hero; he was basically my father since my mom raised me as a single mother. Back then, I didn’t know its real purpose; all I knew was that it held some coins that could get me a snack.
