My Future at Baruch

As a freshman, it can be difficult to learn about everything that your new college has to offer to you. However, since my first day at Baruch, my knowledge of the school has grown to the point that I have learned just how easily I can utilize everything that the school has to offer to me. Most especially, it was through all of the workshops from Freshman Orientation that I learned about everything around me. The center that I have taken advantage of the most so far has been the library. I have used a lot of my free time between classes to go to the library and use the studious environment that it offers in order to get a lot of my work done. In addition to the library, I have also spent my time with a club that has also helped me through my first semester: the Golden Key Buddies Program. Through the workshops they organized, I learned how to truly be successful and take advantage of everything around me during my time at Baruch. I plan on advancing myself into the club next semester and hopefully even gaining a leadership position in the upcoming years. All of the resources that I have been exposed to have helped me get through this fun, yet obstacle filled, first semester. The community service project that we were assigned first appeared to be any other task that I had to complete during my first year of college. However, as the Fall semester comes to an end, I no longer view it as just a project. Instead, it is the opportunity for me to get started on something that is much larger than myself: a life of service. I believe that by partaking in volunteering so soon, it will be a stepping stone toward my future endeavours in giving back to the community that has given me so much. Throughout my next four years at Baruch, I wish to accomplish all of the goals that I have set for myself. However, this is the simplest vision that I have of myself. I hope that with every passing day, I will learn to use all of the resources that I have around me in order to become my best possible self. I have always been one to strive for greatness and I believe that Baruch will guide me throughout this journey. Waking up everyday knowing that I will be immersing myself within the world’s greatest city is something that people from all around the world dream of and as a result, I plan to always make the most out of this amazing opportunity.

The True Meaning of a Scholar

The common misconception that most people have about honor societies and scholars is that they are just academically gifted students that seek to gain good grades and nothing more. A true scholar, however, is much more than a person who vies for a number grade on their test. The characteristics of a scholar is someone who is not only academically gifted, but also, displays the willingness and ability to take leadership and strive to give back to the community in any way possible. Whether it be on a local, national, or even global scale, any form of service is key to defining what a scholar portrays. Therefore, as Baruch scholars, it is each of our responsibilities to not only focus on maintaining our GPA for our scholarships and future success. We must remember the true definition of a scholar and embody this in our everyday lives within every opportunity that we are given. We should not have to be forced to do community service because the school mandates it, but rather, do it from our own will. A perfect example of this would be to volunteer with no reward or assignment attached to it. Instead, we do it in order to give back to the community that in its own special way had provided for each of us, even if it was only one instance. When we are blessed with a life and abilities that people wish everyday they had, it becomes our obligation to spread the blessings that we have received as well. Therefore, a true scholar uses the gifts and blessings that she or he has received and carries the blessings on to the next person.

Family is Everything

Ever since I was a young kid, my parents would always tell me to never forget how important family is. To always remember that even if all else fails and you feel as though you’re all alone, your family will always be there for you. Now, as a young kid I took this saying for granted. Of course family is one of the most important aspects of life, who could ever think otherwise? Now that I’ve grown and have experienced more of what this world has to offer to me it seems as though my family told me that saying at a young age for a reason, almost to instill it within my being and everyday way of life. Because I have lived my entire life making my family a priority it is effortless for me to do so today. But the more people I meet, the more I realize that a strong, unified family isn’t as common as my young self had once imagined it to be. Rather, it is a blessing to have a family that is as close as I’d like to believe my family and I to be. They are one of my greatest motivations as they push me to always strive for greatness in anything that I do. I strive to not only succeed for myself, but more importantly the people who got me to where I am right now. The greatest factor in my success has come from my family and I can only repay them by showing them that all their hard work and dedication into me was to help me succeed like no other. I hope to display this success as a great student these next four years and that this hard work will lead to a life of prosperity, happiness, and love.
