Tritone – Artist Statement

Tritone is a project of sensation, both visually and audibly. In a way that its supposed to represent the paranoia of a character who is running away. The portrayal of the fear in this character is produced by the fact that the character is been chased down by the unknown. The video constantly changes in between visuals, going back and forth displaying two separate occasions. One of them been the opening scene which displays the fact that this character is been followed or chased, during this portion we encounter the path of the character and his sense of direction as we constantly switch in between tempos and frame shots, the character constantly slows down to observe his surroundings but quickly later begins to rush again. The different tempos allowed me to portray a sense of suspense which is what i aimed for. Now, the second portion of this video displays a more relaxing imagery, yet, slightly suspenseful. Using this it allowed me two things, either a memory or a dream. Leading towards the idea to clue my audience that this could’ve been an earlier shot or the actual beginning of the video. Its up to the viewer for interpretation. Yet, still offering suspense to the audience. I believe that my choosing of audio greatly influenced my project as it allowed me to connect my entire project, it heavily influenced the mood of the project and allowed me to create a puzzling story.

5000 Feet of Awesomeness

It’s hard for us to sympathize to an issue that is a thousand miles away unless it goes viral on the internet or in the news. The way Omer fast connected us to the drone pilot and the people affected by his actions is brilliant. The re-enactment of the ‘interview’ shows how powerful a message is when it hits close to home. The inside shots of the car make it feel like we are driving along with the family in their journey to safety. The way he humanizes the narrator and the drone pilot is also worth noting. Whenever the narrator is in the shot, we could sense his anxiety and his uneasiness with the interview through his consumption of pills and his excuse that he had a phone call. The way he is lying on the bed is similar to that of a patient in a psychiatrist’s chair. It’s these little details that help us see that whatever the narrator experienced is still haunting him.
When the narrator looks up and it transitions to an aerial shot of Vegas and the drone pilot starts narrating his experience, I saw it as a transition of perspectives. The first half was seen through the eyes of the prey(the victim), while the second half was seen through the eyes of the hunter(the drone pilot). I admire the way he juxtaposed each perspective. In the first half, it is very emotional and personal because the narrator seem to be connected to the event. On the other hand, the drone pilot is less emotional, recounting his story through facts, details and events which suggest his distance from his actions. However, this does not mean that the drone pilot was incapable of feeling, he recalls that he became more and more self-aware as the time went by.

Final Project

For my final project I wanted to include as many shots as possible to try something different. I went with Roksy all over the city trying to capture different shots. we captured shots around Baruch,Union Square and 34th street. The idea of the vide was inspired by my move that’s going to occur in the summer. I’m moving to Michigan and I wanted to capture as much of my New York City history. I captured shots of my old jobs, barber and people who influence my stay at New York.

final project

My final project is the mirror of my soul at the moment. I recently went to Paris and told myself “I have to make a video”. When I first left paris I felt that I didn’t accomplish my goal, At least I thought so. Until recently,  I started brainstorming ideas for my final project and I suddenly thought of Paris! I thought why not create a little video that will show the most important things that I’ve seen in Paris while visiting my family. While being there I recorded a lot of little videos for myself and some I sent to my friends.

In the beginning of my video I have a shot of me walking faster and faster and then I transition the video to show a clip of me walking backwards, a metaphor of re-jogging my memory. The train was used as a tool to represent time and space. The train was The transition that brought my video clips together. My main purpose of visiting paris in January was to visit my family. I included still shots of them because they made it a very exciting journey and wanted to show appreciation for giving me this opportunity. The final scene was a shot of me day dreaming having a nostalgic memory of my happy place called Á Paris

Final Project Artist Statement

*Prof said I could use artist statement for previous final idea

My final project will include time-lapse footage of sleeping in a normal bedroom and walking in a haunted house. The footage of the house will be very fast-paced while the footage of sleep will be slower. In “Paying Attention”, Jonathan Beller mentioned that the film industry created image-commodities that “valorizes” certain images. The footage I have is similar to film from horror movies, as the fast-pace effect is commonly used to indicate a memory or illicit fear, anxiety, or anticipation due to the uncertainty of these images. Implying a memory or dream by altering time is also discussed in T.J Demo’s “A Matter of Time”. She states, “Modern psychology soon recognized that human beings may experience time’s flow variably; that the lived duration may be manipulated”. In other words, experience is defined by time, and the alteration of time can invoke different emotions.  I am hoping that my time lapse will invoke a state of anxiety instead of humor, as a few of my previous time lapses have seemed more humorous than serious. By altering between images of someone sleeping and the perspective of someone walking through the house, I hope to portray a sense of being watched, as I have done this in my previous videos and I think it would be interesting to connect my final with my previous two video projects. Peter Weibel’s “Endless Sandwich” gives an example of this, although his video literally shows a man watching a video of him watching another video.

Response to Digital Divide

Technology, especially social media and the internet has changed the interaction of humans beings significantly. Videos, pictures, and documents could be shared in an instant. Art could be seen online with images of every piece of art posted online and found with a click of a button. This change in society has decreased the value of appreciation. It’s difficult to appreciate an item of value when it is easily accessed. Art in museum for example is no longer appreciated as it once was because everything could be seen a click away rather then traveling to a certain museum where the piece is found. I believe this change technology has made access to information much easier but it seems to still have it’s downside on the overall psychology of the human being.

Tacita Dean exhibit

I visited the Tacita Dean exhibit and thought it was slightly more interesting than the Anri Sala exhibit we had to visit at the Marian Goodman Gallery earlier on in the semester. When I walked into the exhibition, I thought the photos of the clouds were a bit strange. Then I read the words on the wall and I thought the concept of “….my English breath in foreign clouds” and how she tied that together in the photos on the wall. It was interesting seeing the different types of clouds on the wall. Some of them were clouds common to see when the weather is full of rain and others were clouds you saw on a day when the sun is fully out with a blue sky surrounding it. I’d like to know what her motive was in choosing the color patterns for the different clouds. Some of them are high quality and show the bright blue clouds, and some of them were shades of gray, as well as clouds that looked abstract that could have came from outer space. The other portion that I thought that was cool was the room that had the random household objects in it. I wasn’t sure of the reasoning behind it but I thought it looked home-y when I walked into the room which felt comforting after seeing all of the clouds.

5000 Feet is the Best

In 5000 Feet is the Best, both parts of the video have moments where the view can be seen from above, or rather “5000 feet away”. The second portion of the video that took place in Las Vegas was a bit boring, but not so much what he was saying. The view of Las Vegas just slowly dragging on made it more difficult to pay attention. I think the artist tries to accomplish depicting both viewpoints of people involved in attacks. In the first portion, the video shows the point of view from the family that gets affected by the explosion after their encounter with the men on the side of the road, whereas the second portion shows the point of view of those observing the different temperatures from the metal rods being buried in the soil.I was nervous for the family portion in the 5000 Feet is the Best video stood out to me the most. The entire time, I was filled with anxiety wondering what would happen to the family when it got too close to those men. I think the color temperature of the video also had something to do with why my eye was more drawn to the first scene

Blog #10

I want to thank you for making this available. It was a stunning depiction of reality and how drone strikes have evolved the act of killing to be done without a presence at the scene of the murder. What was most appealing to me was that the soldier being interviewed had ptsd. Thus providing the link to the murders without even actually experiencing it in person. What a unique perspective. A murder cleared by the government still effects the soldier manning what could be described as a real life video game. As this art reflects life, it is clear that no one is safe from the evil of destruction that man has created. I wonder if the higher ups, in government, sleep well at night knowing that every time the clearance is given, the same life they took creates invisible blood on their hands. Initially, I watched this video and had to replay it. My only regret is not being able to experience it looping in the exhibition, so that I pick up on the nuances that walking into the project at a random time provides. I researched the video on google and I have to say it was well worth it as I was unclear on the meaning behind the narrative.
