Blog hw #1: Marclay

The two pieces I wanted to discuss was “Telephones, 1995 by Christian Marclay” and “I am making art”.
In Telephones the emphasis on cutting clips was represented by the process of dialing, picking up, and hanging up the telephone. Popularized by movie scenes this process highlighted the task of using a telephone. It was at times rough in transition to the next clip and at other times it was smooth. Almost as if the conversation continued through the following different clip/location/movie. I found it interesting that there is elements of anticipation, relief, and anxiety. However the only location shared by the scenes were the action of interacting with the event of a phone call.
In I am making art, the location remained the same with the difference being the body language. The subject proclaims that he is making art. Indeed he is because the video taping of such a scene is art itself. It contrasts the difference in body language when making the statement “I am making art”. Almost comical this scene was repetitious and slightly obscure. I didn’t much appreciate the concept because although art is considered self-expression it seemed lazy and boring.
The two videos were from 2 different times and two different approaches. One being the use of using already established scenes and actors while the other one with one actor and a continuous scene. I appreciated the telephone video because it highlighted the actions taken when a phone is involved. I was fascinated by the actions taken when the phone is involved. Contrasting this video from “I am making art” it was thoughtful and took much more time to create. While “I am making art” was an expression of what we might think was art and what it actually is. Art is an expression of an idea or ideas and these two videos did just that.
