I wanted to capture a portrait of chickens. I developed a close relationship with the chickens I care for on the weekends and I believed focusing on the different personalities of the chickens and using close-ups would be an effective way to portray them in an unconventional way. I took numerous clips of them but the one I chose focuses on a chicken who is an ‘outsider’. She usually prefers to be by herself (although she is very friendly with me) and the use of much negative space and concealing her face (when her back turns to me) conveys this. I thought I captured some nice compositions when she was wandering by the broken tree branch, but I wished I continued filming her until she walked out of the frame. I believe this would have better depicted the sense of peace and loneliness at the end of the clip. The “boss chicken” who chimed in is a good contrast to the main character’s shy personality, and it was something funny that I didn’t expect. I wish I could make it less shaky and blurry, but it was difficult seeing what was on the screen as I was recording it because I had to get down on the ground to film.
