Blog 06: Aura of mediums

Walter Benjamin talks about the aura of mediums, so much so that he emphasizes the ability to perceive a piece of art as it is before the introduction of mechanical reproduction.  In my opinion, there’s a bigger picture when it comes to the aura of an art piece that is more easily understood given the day and time. For instance, it seems that the aura of an art piece will stay eminent for as long as there is value added to it. This means giving limited access to who can see the pieces and how much mass production should be allowed. Moreover, art is an interpretive medium that doesn’t necessarily reach enough people in society to gain the amount of value it truly deserves. Therefore, the idea of preserving the aura versus mechanical production almost feels like a double-edged sword.
