Re: Addressing Vacation Days Request

I want to make a few suggestions regarding how we request our vacations especial during the period when school is out for the kids.

I am concerned for the newly hired employees who would like to take their vacations at specific times of the year due to family or other circumstances.

I know as part of our union (NYSNA) policy, there is the seniority precedent when it comes to vacation days request. As stated in our policy item 7.08 under Vacation Scheduling, it states that the vacation period will be the entire year, subject to the needs of the Hospital Center, as determined by the Hospital Center. An employee will, subject to the Hospital Center’s operating requirements, have his or her choice of vacation time; it being recognized, however, that vacations must be scheduled by the Hospital Center in a manner designed to insure the effective and efficient operation of the Hospital Center.

Vacation requests submitted by December 1st for the period February 1st to April 30th, by March 1st for the period May 1st to September 30th, and by August 1st for the period October 1st to January 31st shall be granted on the basis of bargaining unit seniority, provided that each employee shall be entitled to a minimum of two (2) consecutive weeks of scheduled vacation during the period May 1st to September 30th in any year. Requests submitted after the cutoff dates shall be honored in the order in which the requests were submitted, regardless of bargaining unit seniority. Employees shall be notified of their approved vacations no later than two (2) weeks after each cutoff date. In cases where employees have submitted after the cutoff date, such approval shall be given as soon as possible, but no later than one (1) week after submitting the request.

I just do not think it is fair that one individual takes a certain time in the year off every year for the past 5years, all in the name of seniority. According to an article written on Forbes.com the lifestyle section by Tanya Mohn stated a study which shows that most managers recognize the benefits taking time off from work provide to employees. It increase productivity, builds a stronger work place morale, encourages employee retention and significant health benefits are some of the finds associated with encouraging vacation time off for employees

I would think it would be fair if these special times like summer vacations and winter breaks from school are rotated round for each employee to have a turn in getting that time off from work as specified by our policy. This I believe will create the environment that this organization has been working so hard to build among it’s employees, if all employees have a fair chance to getting these very controversial times off from work.

To see how effective or how much the employee would like this idea, I would suggest we discuss this issue in one of our monthly staff meetings to see if there will be any supporters for this idea.

Thank you for your time and looking forward to helping make this change a reality.

“12 Angry Men”

There were a lot of varied emotions portrayed in this movie “12 Angry Men”. These emotions were portrayed throughout the entire movie, from the very beginning of the movie to the very last scene of the movie. The Jurors discussions started out with juror #1 took charge to set the rules as to how they were going to vote and the order in which they were even going to be seated to the order in which they were going to take turns in speaking. From this setup the juror #1 encourage a sort of democratic style of leadership by encouraging the other to voice out what they were thinking and think might work better.

It seems all the jurors were in some sort of hurry to cast their vote so they can be done with that and get to a more important business. All the jurors except juror #8 who cast his first vote by not just basing his decision on only the facts that were presented to them in the court room. All the others had their mind made up without much thought to how substantial the evidence presented were.

It was because of the boldness of juror #8 that logical reasoning was applied to come to the final unanimous NOT GUILTY verdict by the jurors. It is sad to say if juror #8 was not part of this juror group there will not have been any other form of deliberation in favor of the young boy.

I am not sure how the deliberation would have gone had it been a different crowd as the jurors for this case, in terms of gender, social class, race and marital status. Would it have been different? Maybe or maybe not. What I am sure of is that all it took was one bold and willing juror to make the difference from what started out as 11:1 in favor of the boy being guilty to 0:12 in favor of the boy not being guilty. In my opinion there were 2 leaders in this jurors. The one who led them to the best logical reasoning decision and the one who made sure some rules were in place.
