Hello Kim I definitely agree with you on the fact that we do need more qualified teachers teaching our kids the future leaders of our land. Your interventions to increase the number of people who go into the education profession are very simple but things that can make a lot of difference. Once this profession is counted in the same caliber of professions as doctors and lawyers, they will demand a lot of respect thereby encouraging more youth into the profession.
Yes Kim you are right. Starting every new thing there will be a lot of bumps and difficulties getting it started but once it becomes established, it will be smooth sailing afterwards.
Hi Kim,
I completely agree with you that the teaching profession is an important and essential part of our society, because teachers are responsible for expanding the minds of students, guiding them, and equipping them with tools to be successful later on in life. Teachers set foundations that students base their lives off of; whether it is dealing with a colleague, to managing work under a boss that you don’t really like. Teachers in the United States are both under-value and under-served. They are paid significantly less than other professions, must fit their curriculum and teaching methods to help students pass standardized exams, and their job as a teacher is graded based on the scores of these standardized tests. Teachers throughout the world enjoy a better status than that of those in the United States. They are respected and revered by students, parents, and the government alike. I think it’s a shame that teachers here are passionate about what they do but end up taking second jobs or even leaving the profession altogether due to the restrictions, unfair wages, and overall hostile climate they have to deal with from policy-makers and school bodies. I went ahead and googled the countries that pay the highest wages to teachers, and have posted the chart below. I agree that teachers need to be paid more so they provide better results in teaching. However, I am afraid that the raise in teacher’s salary will increase the amount of students per classroom, thus decreasing the amount of teachers willing to put up with such large classrooms.
