NY Legalizes Gay Marriage
So NY finally legalized gay marriage and I am sure thousands of people all over the state and country are thrilled and jumping uncontrollably right now. I honestly hadn’t realized just how far this gay marriage issue goes until I watched that movie in class, and had to see that poor police officer and that poor farmer from the south have to endure unimaginable hardships because the law makes it so difficult if not nearly impossibly for gay couples to get what is rightfully theirs, and something that a straight couple would not even have to ask for, it would just be automatically handed to them. I don’t know how I feel about gay marriage. I mean this is America and everyone has the right to be treated equal, and to pursuit happiness, that is one of the founding principles of this country. I have nothing against homosexual people, they don’t bother me and I don’t bother them and I don’t see why anyone else should bother them. The heart wants what it wants, and who are you to tell anyone otherwise. As far as marriage goes, I don’t know, it’s not that I’m against it, its just a little hard for me to be able to fully wrap my mind around it. Its just since the beginning of time its been Adam and Eve, since I was born I have been conditioned to think by family, friends, and society in general that marriage is between a man and a woman. I’m a very open minded person, and If I’m having trouble grasping this concept, then I can imagine how much trouble other people must be having.NY Gay Marriage
Apple mania leaves me with a sour taste
Consumerism is really bad to children. Also, advertisements trigger kids want to buy what they don’t need and parents are pressured to pay for it. Children are educated by advertisement that is ok to have nice things. Children want to be the most fashionable and they want to wear the most expensive clothing or high-end products. Children often want to but the products that are advertised and they will do anything to get their parents to buy by giving tantrums that their parents easily give in. Parents can no longer afford their Children demands. Consumerism has reached a new level of dangerous pursuits for children. The news outlet chinadaily.com.cn recently posted an article online that a 17 year old student who sold one of his kidneys to a dealer he met online to buy an iPad 2. His parents learned about it called the police on the dealer. As the article shows, children can put themselves in grave danger when their desire for certain items makes them act in ways that can create disastrous consequences. This is a phenomenon that if left unchecked it can cause tremendous damage to children growing up in today’s consumer society.

The Injustice of Reality T.V. Shows by Molly Mallin
This article: “TV Contestants: Tired, Tispy and Pushed to Brink from The New York Times (August 2nd, 2009) is about how contestants are treated mainly off camera in different reality shows. There is definitley an injustice in how people who participate in these shows are handled. They are without a doubt, according to this article, treated poorly.
In this article it says, that contestants on reality shows find themselves having long workdays and “communication blackouts” (pg.#1 of this article by Edward Wyatt). These shows have “…. evolved arguably into Hollywood’s sweatshop” (pg. #1- of this article).
Most contestants recieve either no pay at all or very little pay. Also most contestants (of most shows) do not have any union representation.
In this article: “Makeover television, governmentality and the good citizen” (by Laurie Ouelette and James Hay) they talk about programmes that try to”…. transform floundering individuals into successful self- managers” (pg. #472- of this article). Supposedly, what comes with this — as the article says, is freedom and burdens that goes into changing the person with the help of coaches, lifestyle experts and motivators.
But to what length do these shows go to to try to intervene in in another human’s life or lifestyle? If these shows are getting a bad rap for how they treat contestants on their shows– then how is this contributing to the well-being of the actual person who is a contestant? Is it so important for them to be their own self-managers that they must endure not getting paid and working too much. All of this for an outcome that may or may not be even good for them or have longevity?
In this article from the New York Times, it talks about how certain contestants are treated by producers. The object of these producers’ goals is to get people (contestants) into a state where they are tired, stressed and emotionally vulnerable. This makes them more easily manipulated.
How is this helping people to feel good about themselves? I think it does the opposite. Does this help people get away from the State and encourage them to help themselves? Even if in some ways if it does the tactics and strategies are all wrong, in my opinion. This says something unfavorable about human nature. These shows are overly aggressive in manipulating people and their ways of getting people to participate are discouraging in many aspects.

Pros vs Cons of Gay Marriage
The issue of whether gay and lesbian people should be allowed to be legally marry has been debated frequently in recent times as noted in the movie we watched in class on 08/17/2011. One part of the society, the right-wingers who believe that homosexuality is morally wrong and on the other side are gay advocates who argue that their sexual preferences shouldn’t determine whether or not they can marry. To the latter group, gay and lesbian couples should have the same civil rights as heterosexual couples, including the right to legally marry.
Advocates for same-sex marriage purport that to deny a couple, no matter what their sexes, the right to marriage is to deny them a basic civil right. If a couple is unable to marry, they cannot access state and federal benefits that married couples can, such as health care, visitation rights when one partner is in the hospital, joint tax benefits and social security. But the fight for equal rights to marry isn’t just about access to benefits. Gay and lesbian couples are also looking for a way to legally proclaim their love for and commitment to each other in the same public way heterosexual couples have always enjoyed.
On the other side are those who state that, by their very nature, homosexual relationships are promiscuous, and so allowing same-sex marriages would increase the divorce rate. Further, opponents of gay marriage say that it would taint the long-standing tradition of the institution of marriage – that is, marriage between one man and one woman.
Supporters of gay marriage counter with the argument that allowing same-sex marriages to occur the government is simply strengthening the relationship between two people and providing them with some legal and economic security.
Another argument that is usually brought against the issue stems from the belief that the primary, if not only, purpose of marriage is procreation. Since procreation is obviously not possible between a same-sex couple, they argue, these couples should not be allowed to marry. They even take the argument further and say that a homosexual couple’s home is no place to raise children, even if the couple were to adopt.
On the flipside, proponents cite studies that have shown that there are no fundamental differences between children who are raised by homo- or heterosexual parents. (Note that many states allow homosexual couples to adopt children, but not to legally marry).
‘ Marriage Equality ‘
The whole concept of marriage is being lost. Getting a divorce has become so common that marriage doesn’t hold as much power as it used to. It’s not the sacred vow that once upon a time held so much power. Many people are now choosing not to get married. In some cases the only reason people do get married is solely for legal purposes and that’s where the advantage lies. Love is something that is and not many people find marriage necessary to bind that love.
The following article argues that because marriage is not as sacred as it used to be that it doesn’t really seem right to restrict some people who do desire it from marrying. The issue of raising children is also raised and it becomes apparent that there is no longer a traditional and ideal way that children are being raised. Many children are already being raised by single parents and if that so happened to be a gay couple then how could that be so different?
The traditional idea of marriage that so many are trying to keep alive is already being lost all over the world. Living together without being married is normal and even having a child out of wedlock is not so uncommon. Times are changing and people are beginning to see gay marriage as not that big of an issue. Its becoming a ‘why not?’ kind of discussion. People are becoming more open minded about marriage because its become a loose term and it’s not as serious as it once used to be.

Homosexual Warning
In society people often find homosexual behavior neither healthy nor normal. Homosexuality is like an alternative lifestyle for some people. The link “Homosexual Warning Video“, it finds the homosexual behavior often see in society as psychological disorder. Based on some people it is a mental illness which is invisible. According to this video, we can see that homosexuality can arise varies factor in the society if people are not concern about it. Such as: boys who are not aware of what is homosexual are about? There fore it is necessary to warn the kids or boys about homosexuality. People with homosexuality often try to take an advantage from kids. So it is necessary to be careful from strangers. Because there is danger which can involve anytime to anybody’s life.
The reason I choose that video, because it gives an idea that since past, homosexuality in society is not acceptable. People always see this with a negative attitude. People are always debating on this. People even in the past were having a homophobia therefore they were trying to make attention toward young kids to be aware of “what is homosexual about”? If we compare with today’s society, we will see many family and parents are arias a fear of the kids of being homo. For example: As we discussed in the class that many homo sexual family’s kids often suffering with this homophobia stress, even though they don’t feel like to be in homosexual relationship.
An Increase in Aids Cases in Muslim Countries
Here is a relevant article that was recently posted in the New York Times. According to the article, Muslim men are more at risk for HIV and AIDS than ever before. Men are increasingly engaging in unsafe sex with other men. The reason for the lack of protection is due to homophobia and religious intolerance, since having gay sex can get you jailed or executed. Therefore, these men feel that they have to hide their homosexuality, especially from their wives. Male prostitution is also on the rise, which can help account for the rapid spread of diseases. These men are also infecting their wives just because of these cultural norms and religious taboos. This relates to the article we recently read that addressed homophobia and conservative view points. According to them, homosexuality in itself will lead to a shorter lifespan. Having gay sex was also considered one of the biggest sins one could commit, because there is no hope of having a child through it. The fact is though, that this fear and homophobia alone are what is causing these men to live shorter lives due to HIV. If these men lives in a more accepting culture, then this risk would very much be minimized. While the United States isn’t the most gay friendly country, I think most people can at least agree that if it’s going to take place, the men should be careful and wear condoms. I truly do feel sorry for these men, because they can never come out of the closet and must always live a lie, or face punishment.
Exploiting Gay Sentiment
After watching a movie on same-sex marriage we started the discussion about how different politicians spoke out about same-sex marriage legalization in NY.
I would like to expand more on how gay sentiment gets played out in different fields of social life, mainly politics and marketing. Election campaigns are staged around controversial topics that candidates debate about. The job of political analytic for candidate is to find out what opinion on issue is more popular among his/her electorate and build the campaign accordingly. Therefore candidates from conservative areas would be more likely to oppose same-sex marriage. Good example of it is possible GOP presidential candidate and Minnesota representative Michele Bachmann, who supports so called reparative therapy and theory that homosexuality should and can be cured. On the other side of political spectrum, politicians in urban areas with large and organized gay communities, like New York, use issue of homosexual rights in opposite way. They learned to gain from exploiting gay sentiment and get actively involved in gay rights legislations and in queer events, like pride parade that boasts more and more politician’s floats. Perfect example of such politician is Andrew Cuomo, whom HRC (Human Rights Campain-enormous national scale organization that promotes LGBTQ rights) portrayed as a hero of NY same-sex marriage legalization. HRC was giving out “Thank you Cuomo” (showed above) and “Promise Kept” banners and also send out all members emails asking to sign under a Thank You letter to him.
Marketing industry was a way ahead of politics in exploiting the likes and desires of queers. Not only in gay media, but everywhere on the streets, in the stores and on TV we can see adds that speculate on homosexual strive for equality, or use highly sexual gay images or emphasize company’s commitment to the equal rights.
Maybe Andrew Cuomo learned how to become popular in LGBTQ community and benefit from it, from his brother in law Kenneth Cole. Designer’s latest pro-gay marriage adds can be seen everywhere, including one outside of Vertical Campus on the side of 25th street.
Just one more add that ties together advertising and politics…
More American women not having children
http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/06/25/us-children-report-idUSTRE65O53O20100625
I wanted to know why some women do not want children. When I was doing research I found an article by Daniel Lippman who explained why more women decide not to have children these days. Since we are in the 21st century women do not feel the big pressure anymore to have children. The tradition has always been the same: Women get married and have kids; However, according to the article this no longer the norm. Also, couples want to enjoy their lives to the fullest; they do not want to deal with the giant responsibility of raising children. Some people believe that children are not the most important element for a successful marriage. Statistically, only 41% of adults think that children are necessary in marriage compared to 65% in 1990. Education is an important factor when it comes to not having kids, according to Lippman the more educated a women is the less likely she will be to have children. In my opinion I think this is primarily because women want time to study and focus in their professions. Children may just break their plans because they will need to get a good babysitter for them, and they will need to spend a lot of time with them. As a result, the rate of childless women has increased because more educated women decide to postpone having children at older ages than the less educated ones.
I think that is better to wait to have children when you’re older, because you will have more responsibility, money and time for your child. A lot of us want to enjoy our life to its fullest and then have children in our late 20’s or early 30’s. Children can cause too much stress plus we do not want to go to the extreme pain of labor.

Child Domestic Work In India
The link I found called “Child domestic work in India”. The reason I choose that link because the link showed some similar object that we watched movie last week based on domestic workers problem and situation. According to this link, it found the issue of highest concern of children as a domestic worker in India; such as children who is under 18 years old and girls. In India it’s often being observe that there are many children is working as a domestic worker in other’s people’s household. Those children usually come from rural area to urban area by their relatives, friends, or traffickers. They are only choosing this occupation because of their family’s poverty. Often they work as a condition of food or shelter. They are being disadvantages of getting an education. They work for long hours or stays employer’s house but get pay very little amount of money. Often they even can’t visit their family or household members. Moreover, often these children’s are frequently face verbally and physically abuse. In some case even they become victimize of sexual abuse by their employer. On the other hand some of these girl child domestic workers find themselves in trapped and get involve in prostitution.
Similar to movie we watched in the class, we can see here that domestic worker mostly experience of staying away from their own family and often get abuse by their employers.
