An Increase in Aids Cases in Muslim Countries

Here is a relevant article that was recently posted in the New York Times. According to the article, Muslim men are more at risk for HIV and AIDS than ever before. Men are increasingly engaging in unsafe sex with other men. The reason for the lack of protection is due to homophobia and religious intolerance, since having gay sex can get you jailed or executed. Therefore, these men feel that they have to hide their homosexuality, especially from their wives. Male prostitution is also on the rise, which can help account for the rapid spread of diseases. These men are also infecting their wives just because of these cultural norms and religious taboos. This relates to the article we recently read that addressed homophobia and conservative view points. According to them, homosexuality in itself will lead to a shorter lifespan. Having gay sex was also considered one of the biggest sins one could commit, because there is no hope of having a child through it. The fact is though, that this fear and homophobia alone are what is causing these men to live shorter lives due to HIV.  If these men lives in a more accepting culture, then this risk would very much be minimized. While the United States isn’t the most gay friendly country, I think most people can at least agree that if it’s going to take place, the men should be careful and wear condoms.  I truly do feel sorry for these men, because they can never come out of the closet and must always live a lie, or face punishment.

A Loss of The American Dream for Hispanics

This article here from the Chicago Sun Times explains how the American Dream for Hispanics is becoming a harder and harder thing to achieve. Many people still believe that with enough hard work and determination, anyone, regardless of ethnicity, can place themselves into the comfort of a middle class lifestyle. However, the housing crisis and the recession have taken the greatest toll on the Hispanic community, especially in Chicago. From 2005 to 2009, the net worth, assets minus debt, of Hispanic households fell 66 percent nationwide, according to a Pew Research Center report. As a result, in 2009, the typical Hispanic household had an astonishing $6,325 in wealth while the average white household had $113.149. This is mostly due to the fact that many minorities were given toxic mortgages that could not be repaid during the housing crisis. These statistics are very shocking, since race seems to now determine ones wealth more than before. The middle class seems to be diminishing for minorities, who have to face obstacles such as racism to overcome their class standing. Our country seems to be following the paths of many third world countries where the difference between the rich and the poor are enormous and there is no way out of the class you were born into. This article reminds me of the movie we watched “Maid in America”, where Hispanic women tried desperately to make themselves into the American Dream through hard work with little pay. “The loss of that quintessential American promise is worse than any downgrade of our country’s financial rating” and that cannot be explained through numbers and statistics.

Has Marketing Gone Too Far?

Marketing is a brutal industry and seems to stop at nothing to make a quick buck. Many advertising campaigns indeed have questionable morals. I have found two somewhat scary trends and “innovations” that are now popular in the marketing world.

One strange advertising trend is pregnant mothers selling their stomach space to advertisers. These temporary tattoo’s appeal to pregnant women who are strapped for cash and can earn several thousand dollars for doing virtually nothing (other than selling part of their body temporarily). One woman recently received $4050 for selling her belly to a gambling website on eBay. The company even wanted her to show it off at the Super Bowl. While I don’t necessarily think this is hurting anyone, I have to question if the women feels embarrassed or shameful when walking around with her stomach hanging out plastered with none other than a gambling ad. What is this teaching her unborn child?

While most of us generally don’t consciously think about what we are smelling while watching ads, some theaters in Germany are now using scent advertising to change that. Special scents are pumped into the theater for 60 seconds in order to make people to want to buy certain products. A sunscreen company Nivea used this technique by pumping the scent of sunscreen into the theater. The results were an astronomical as “Cinema exit polls showed a 515% rise in recall for the Nivea ad compared with moviegoers who saw the spot without the scent. The same ad, when combined with only a subliminal whiff of scent, scored a 25% lift.” Even our noses are not immune to the power of marketing. I wonder how long it will take for this to come to the US. Both of these trends make me further question if we really have a choice in the market as consumers when advertisers are willing to go this far?

Eugenics Today

After discussing the controversial issue of eugenics in class and going over how it was used for negative things such as forced sterilization and genocide I was curious if there was anything happening today in regards to it. I did a quick search and found this article about sterilization being used today in an organization called “Project Prevention” in California. This organization offers drug addicts the incentive of $300 if they agree to become sterilized. The goal of this is to prevent babies from being exposed to drugs while still in the womb and to prevent the pain and hardships of having to grow up with drug addicted parents. They use advertising campaigns featuring crying babies with the slogan “Get birth control or get sterilized and we’ll pay you $300!” This project has faced a plethora of backlash for several reasons. First, many feel this is a violation of civil rights by promoting a “vicious image of the external drug addict” with no focus on the internal human being. Secondly, this organization is preying on a vulnerable and desperate population of drug addicts, who are going to be willing to do almost anything for $300. I wonder if anyone who has gotten sterilized now regrets the decision. Perhaps these drug addicts will be able to clean up their lives and in the future want children. While it’s not technically “forced” sterilization, this entire process is very reminiscent of the history of eugenics in the US and shows how this entire ideology still has support for population control.

Ultra Modern Family: Dad+Dad+Baby

In this article from ABC Nightline, we are introduced into a growing trend of gay Hollywood couples using surrogacy to become parents. Openly gay and now legally married celebrities such as actor Neil Patrick Harris and director Todd Holland have both opted to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to have the perfect surrogacy experience. A popular Los Angeles based surrogacy agency “Growing Generations” says that about 75 percent of their clientele are gay couples. The cost of surrogacy at this agency runs from $125,000 to $200,000. Gay couples can often feel as if they are ‘online shopping’ for egg donors, who must create a profile to include education, ethnicity and occupation as well as a video clip of themselves for potential couples to ‘buy’ their eggs. This agency differs from most in the fact that the egg donor and the surrogate mother must be different women in a hope that the surrogate mother will not become attached to the baby since there is no biological connection. Surrogates must go through psychological screening and preparation to prove she is fit for the job and understands the consequences.  However, such a complex process is never easy, especially when insurance and two women with different roles are involved. In the case of director Todd Holland, his surrogate was carrying three viable embryos, and insurance only covered two babies. The insurance company suggested they abort one of the embryos simply to save money. However, the surrogate mother used her own insurance, which was able to pick up the remaining bill and the couple now has three healthy children. This article is interesting in showing how even something such as surrogacy has a ‘top of the line’ agency which advocates for rich and celebrity clients. I feel this article was realistic in that it showed that problems do arise and politics such as insurance coverage often try to undermine the process as a whole. It overall shows surrogacy in a positive light since gay couples are not only able to have the gift of children, but they are able to choose the egg donor and surrogate that best fits their needs.
