Facebook Targeted by Anonymous

In a recent article in businessinsider an impending attack on facebook by the hacktivist group known as Anonymous was discussed. They claim that the reason for the attack on facebook is because of facebook invading the privacy of all its users claiming that facebook knows more about their users than even their own families. This whole internet hacktivism seems to be an interesting topic and although may not have much correlation with how families operate, it would be interesting to see what happens when the largest social network is shut down.

My own take on why Anonymous exists is that this all can stem from growth in segmented marketing and the Patriot Act. Our every key stroke that we make online can be recorded and every site we visit is definitely recorded. I always get freaked out on how accurate the advertisements on facebook are because they all have to do with something that I am interested in. I believe with the addition of the patriot act it has made it easier for the government and corporations who maybe lobby for certain influential parts of the government to monitor the every move of citizens.

Whether it is for security or marketing we are being watched, our friends are being watched, and our families are being watched. Popular culture, which can be decided through segmented marketing, can now possibly be more controlled if we are watched more closely. While I am not a supporter of Anonymous I do feel it would be interesting to see people’s reaction when facebook is shut down for a period of time, just to see if there is any chaos that ensues. Whether it is from people who can’t access their page or from marketers who can’t look at what people are typing to figure out what to sell certain individuals.

Consumerism and Pop Culture

Pop culture is a very dynamic entity, it decides what’s cool, what’s lame and has the ability to tell people what to buy therefore can be the deciding factor in the financial decisions multi billionaires make. It’s also something that will inevitably change over and over again throughout time. I always wonder who is it really that controls pop culture, because it isn’t something tangible, we can’t hold it in our hands or ask it what the next cool thing is going to be. Pop culture is simply formed of ideas that are shared and filtered through word of mouth and whatever means of communication exist in that period of time whether it be the telephone, written mail, magazines, newspapers, e-mails, etc. Then those ideas get filtered again and picked up by the consumers, whichever idea becomes the most popular will have the most invested, time, interest, and money therefore becoming “cool.”

What was cool in the 50’s and 60’s may not be cool these days, marketing strategies were different, morals were different, ideals were different, and the climate of pop culture was different. It’s amazing to see that there were such blatantly bias/racist advertisements in the past decades of the United States until someone presented the idea that let’s get the most money out of EVERYONE possible no matter what race, or social class, let’s just make some money. I don’t mean to sound like an old man after all I’m only in my early 20’s but back when I was a kid the main consumer demographic was at the age of 18-30 years old. Nowadays it seems like with this new tween wave of consumerism the main demographic is ages 9-12, which is considerably smaller and since when did children have such influence over the financial industry anyway because let’s face it, what’s “cool” is what is going to be making money anyway. I don’t know where this came from and I’m not a big fan of it, but I don’t wish it gone from existence I just would like a reason to all this successful tween consumerism being thrown in my face every time I turn on the television. Again I’ll just chalk it up to the ever changing entity of pop culture and what was cool and okay to do back then is different now. I posted a YouTube video of an old Jell-O commercial that seems questionable if it were on the air today but again this is pop culture in the 1960’s for you guys. It can be considered a stereotypical and offensive commercial to people so I’m just putting that out there for anyone who clicks the YouTube video.

Childhood Obesity and State Intervention

I was reading an article that was published on 7/14/11 in the Huffington Post, which talked about obesity in children and whether or not state intervention should take place against the parents of these kids. Apparently the article had been written by someone named David Katz who happens to be a director of medical research at Yale. The article seemed to be written in almost a condescending tone as if it was a doctor who knew more than the patient and made sure we were aware of that. The tone was not my only concern with the article but some of the content was about an airplane flight the author was in and his neighbor on the flight happened to be an overweight woman who was traveling with her overweight sister and two year old child. The doctor brings up the question of if a mother starts overfeeding her child to the point where it leads to health issues, then what’s the difference between that and if a mother gave her children narcotic drugs.

The comparison although taken to a bit of an extreme is still a very interesting one. This country still does have a health problem concerning children so shouldn’t we do ALL that we can to fix it? Then there comes the question of where do we draw the line, we’ll take children out of abusive homes because it will lead to an unhealthy future for them as adults so doesn’t it make sense that childhood diabetes and obesity leads to an unhealthy future therefore should we take those children away from their parents as well following that particular logic. Although this article is written with some bias it does bring up some interesting topics for discussion.
