Tobay Beach

Tobay beaches new sand barrier.

One of the biggest perks about living on Long Island is the beautiful beaches that surround the coastline. I personally love going to the beach and try to get there as often as possible during every season. I especially like to bring my dogs to the beach because they love it, but they aren’t allowed so I have to wait until the off season to bring them. This weekend I brought them to the beach because it was too cold for many people to be there so it was a perfect opportunity.

My dogs Mason (black) and Layla (brown and white)

I got my dogs out of the car, and walked them over to the tunnel you need to walk through to reach the beach and as I emerged from the tunnel onto the beach I saw something that i couldn’t explain at first. Someone had been at work at the beach creating huge piles of sand about 10 feet before where the waves would crash. It was at that moment I realized that these were put there to stop the waves, and more importantly the ever increasing rate of erosion that the waves cause. I wasn’t sure what to think about the situation, on one hand I’m happy that the town is making efforts to try and fight it, but it also makes me think about the future. How much longer until mother nature slow decay of the beach is complete? 10 years? 30 years? 100 years? I’m not a geologist so I cant tell you how long, but it doesn’t take a genius to realize that it won’t be here forever, and i’m afraid if something isn’t done soon it’ll be too late.

Madison Square Park

Madison Square park is your classic NYC public park, from the droves of people that come to eat food while sitting on the grass to the brave few who decide to play live music. About 20 feet to my right a thin, wrinkled man plays his trumpet dressed in all black with black sunglasses with a bin sitting right next to him in order to collect tips, while everyone walks by too busy with their own day to give the man any real attention. The only ones paying him any mind are the passing dogs on their owner’s short leashes who decide that they are intrigued by the new smell. He blasts the trumpet in the dog’s faces playfully, some of them being puppies jumped back nearly 10 feet not expecting the loud blaring of the horn in their face while the older ones just slowly walked away from the stranger. The trumpet guy left after about 15 minutes of no tips probably to case out a new spot and see if those passerby’s are a little more generous. Even without him the park is still alive with the sounds of people talking into their phones and occasionally to each other, and the barking of the lucky dogs who’s owners decided to take them for a walk today. Every once in a while the dogs get into little scuffles over whatever puppies like to get in scuffles about and the area is filled with some aggressive barking for a few seconds, but its short lived as both owners quickly scold their pets calling them a “bad” boy or girl and just as quickly go on their way.
