Feature Writing

Magazine Article Pitch

For this final article, I want to investigating how Donald Trump won the election from a pure marketing aspect.

A concept every marketer understand or should understand is that we can’t and shouldn’t target everyone. Segmenting and narrowing the target range is important for creating an effective message to engage and mobilize people. This is what Trump’s campaign about. He doesn’t really care if you hate him. His focus was on getting his supporter out and vote for him on the election day.

Donald Trump’s campaign also did a good job on getting the public to know about him as a presidential candidate. Many of other Republican candidates dropped out, without people even knowing about they were entering the race. However, at the same time, trump was getting all the media coverages, all the eyeballs.

I’m planning to interview Jessica Mahlbacher, a graduate student at CUNY majoring in Political Science. I also plan to interview Steve Gold, CCO from GNF Marketing.

Publications idea

I would like to write for Contently. Contently is a technology company that helps brands create great contents. They also publish articles regarding marketing, branding and others in a digital arena. They articles offer valuable insights, data points, opinions and advices. They would have articles like 10 steps of something, or how to create a strong brand. One feature that I really like about Contently is that their articles usually contain creative and colorful graphics, pictures and infographics. However, Contently doesn’t own a magazine publication, so I’m not sure if is suitable for our final article project. If not, I will also like to write for Adweek. Adweek is also a very marketing oriented publication.

I asked, “So what’s your topic about?”

“My topic is about redefining stereotypes of Asian in the media entertainment industry.” He slowly gathers his words together.

“For example,” he says, “all Asians are good at math.”

He says firmly, “These need to be changed.”

Op-ed Pitch: Autonomous weapons

For this article, I want to focus on the issue of autonomous weapon. According to an article from NY Times, the Pentagon’s latest budget outlined $18 billion to be spent over three years on technologies that included those needed for autonomous weapons. The conversation today is no longer about whether or not we should have autonomous weapons. Our government, any other governments in the world, would spend times and money for such a development no matter what. Today, the government is focused on how much autonomy to give to those robots.

My opinion on this issue is that such technology only creates more conflicts, tensions, and eventually wars. As countries trying to compete with each other regarding the development of this technology and fighting to gain military influence in the world, international relationships become more tense and people would live under fears of being attack.

I don’t have anyone particular in mind that I want to interview yet. I’m open for suggestions.

Assignment

This article is featuring a photographer, Annie Leibovitzs and her personal project “Women: New Portraits”. I think what works in this article is the momentum of continuing women empowerment. A woman is working on her dream project of featuring the life of other women. The article not only showcases the well-known publishers and celebrities Leibovitzs had work for but also reveals her personal story behind the project.

The angle of this article is how Leibovitzs reworked on her project which she started with her friend 15 years ago, and the difference between then and now.

Election article pitch

“I call myself a philanthropist. I spent a lot of efforts in the past ten years, with different organizations, to increase the availability of educational content that will increase tolerance and benevolence in this world. I can’t let Donald Trump ruins it,” Cecilia Chan said.

Cecilia Chan is a 52 years old American citizen live in New York City. She committed to philanthropic efforts that support education and sustainable positive changes. She believes in Tikkun Olam – healing the world. Chan is a Trustee of Facing History and Ourselves, a highly respected global organization aims to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. A documentary film focused on the Nanjing Massacre and the Holocaust is being produced by Chan and USC Shoah Foundation with the aim to education people about the tragedy of genocides and the importance of tolerance.

“Everything he said went against what I stand for. Politics is important but not my area of specialty. Therefore, I do my best to support Hillary Clinton.”

This year, we have our first female presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, won the support of a major political party. This year, we also have our first not-politically-experienced candidate, Donald Trump, won the support of another major party in the U.S. 2016 election is unprecedented, and affects many American citizens. Chan is one of them. She donated $20,000 to Clinton’s presidential campaign as support. This amount might not seem a lot to the campaign but this is the first time that she decided to donate to a presidential campaign.

The Quality of Online Education at Baruch College

In recent years, more and more attention and effort is dedicated to online education. It has grown into a major branch in the entire educational system. Baruch College is also working on offering more quality online education to its students to fit various needs. However, the definition of the “quality” is open for discussion. From the college’s point of view, the quality of education will not decrease because they are working on a new technology that will track students’ performance history, figure out what students don’t understand, then set study plans for students to absorb all the course materials. On the other end, many believe that online education does not offer the same quality as the traditional in class education. I plan to interview my hybrid class professor and classmates regarding this issue.
