Lesson Materials: 1. PowerPoint Presentation

Lesson Objectives: 1. Understand how to conduct peer review, specifically for revising one’s content, organization, and aspects of one’s rhetorical situation; 2. Learn to develop organizational statements; 3. Learn about and practice reflective writing; 4. Practice conducting peer review of higher order concerns and take some time to practice revising using peers’ feedback, applying what was learned in readings about the writing process.

Connection to Major Paper/Project: Today’s lesson offers the opportunity to revise stories in terms of content, organization, and rhetorical awareness

Connection to Course Goals: An important course goal is to offer students the opportunity to analyze texts in a variety of genres and today’s lesson meets this goal by focusing on the narrative genre. You will also engage in an in class writing activity that will help you make progress in their writing process, thereby emphasizing the idea of writing as a process. You will also practice reflecting on how genre, audience, and purpose affect a piece of writing.

Lesson Activities:

  1. Organizational Statements: Read the handout about organizational statements; Build an organizational statement into the thesis of your story; Share with a partner to get and give feedback with each other.
  2. Google Docs Guide: Read the Google Docs Guide and prepare questions you may have; Practice with your drafting document in the Google Drive class folder: 1. the suggesting feature for tracked in-line edits, making a comment, and replying to a comment
  3. Conducting Peer Review: Read the peer review handout; Discuss what you learned with a partner. List two things that you learned and ask one question that crossed your mind.
  4. Content, Organization, and Rhetorical Situation (CORS) Peer Review Handout: Read the CORS Peer Review Handout and prepare any questions you may have; After having your questions answered, begin providing feedback to a partner using your drafting Google Docs.
  5. Revision: Make revisions based on a partner’s feedback and keep using the CORS handout to continue revising your own draft for content and organization
