Lesson Objectives: 1) Understand that writing is a non-linear process involving intensive revision; 2) Understand the meaning of a rhetorical situation and its impact on writing; 3) Develop an awareness of genre and its impact on one’s linguistic and rhetorical choices.

Connection to First Major Paper/Project: This lesson sets the tone for the entire semester, including the first unit. It will help you organize your writing process for the narrative assignment, think about audience and purpose, and consider the unique considerations of this genre.

Connection to Course Goals: We will explore the course goal related to process and the one related to genre awareness. You will learn about these concepts in preparation for practicing with them/using them throughout the semester.

Activities:

  1. Reading Annotation GuideRead this guide in detail and use it for all readings you do for this class.
  2. Reading Summary Response: Post your response as a comment to the blog post in the link. We will then have a class discussion about today’s reading using your summary responses. 
  3. PowerPoint Presentation: You will follow PowerPoint instructions in the lesson materials’ link above, and consider the notion that writing is a process, is rhetorical, and is genre-based.
