personal enrichment workshop- your life, your money

one of the best workshops i attended by far!!!
It was not too long, we watched a program called “Your life, Your money” :p
The video was actually very interesting and usefull because everyone is constantly worried about money and how to get and save it, so it shines a light on how to better manage your finances.
Best part of the workshop= lots of free stuff.
I got to bring a whole pie of pizza home, plus a goodie bag with a copy of the dvd, a book, and 2 magazines. Oh, and a great USB drive as a welcoming gift, oo and its a wrist band!! lol

Personal Enrichment: major choise- 11/16/09

To be blunt, I didn’t see any relevance of this workshop. Of course it’s important that there are consulting offices that help anyone with a personality crisis and other offices that help with choosing a major, but I personally don’t see the connection this particular workshop had with school.  It tried to sum up people’s lives in a nutshell of 30 minutes and expect that an oversimplified description of yourself would be the answer to what major you should pick and what career you should have. I suppose if people have absolutely no idea who they are or what they want to do, then the workshop might be helpful, but even then I doubt it would do much other than let those kinds or people know their dilemma: they have absolutely no idea who they are or what they want to do.

Club Fair- 9/25/09

As expected, the fair was the most hectic out of all the workshops I have been to.  There must have been at least 50 different clubs representing themselves there, and the massive group of freshman wasn’t easy to maneuver around either, especially when the radio group started to perform. The fair had all the clubs one would expect to find in a college; clubs about countries, cultures, academics, and fraternities. Now that last group of clubs confused me. How can you have a fraternity in a college with no dorms? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of a fraternity, or in this case, multiple fraternities? As for all other clubs, I was disappointed that they only had one philosophy club: the “objectivism club”. I don’t think I would be going to that club anytime soon, and as for the Japan club, I was a tad interested at first, but then I realized that the last thing I need are otaku’s asking me questions about japan and having to say cheesy Japanese phrases for them.

“Doll House” play- 11/5/09

I would never have thought I would come across this play again, but I guess Ibsen is more famous than I thought. I read the play before during high school, so I was very familiar with the performance to the point where I recognized nearly all of the lines and their hidden implications.  If I never read the play before, I’m positive I wouldn’t have understood or enjoyed it as much as I did then. This is how I feel about Shakespeare plays as well: you can’t really enjoy any of the old, sophisticated plays without firs reading them, though, ironically, the plays themselves are not meant to be written, only to be performed.

Basic Interviewing- 11/12/09

This workshop was the most informative out of all the workshops I attended. Though I grew up in a household where etiquette was key, the advisers stressed that point more than my parents ever did. They also showed me the importance of a resume and how well you need to know about your own work history. Sure, it was pretty intimidating, but it reminded me to keep a tab on all the jobs I did do and will do in the future. What I found most helpful was what wasn’t in the workshop: they offered to give mock interviews to any student and even send them a tape of ourselves and advise us on ow to perform better. I definitely plan on meeting with them soon.

Freshman Reception- 9/17/09

There isn’t much to say about this one..

It was the least organized of all the other work shops because of the plethora of incoming freshman. There might have been around two hundred students or more, but eventually we were split into two or three groups. It only got worse from there: my group barely fit in the class room and there seemed to be a lack of faculty to start the workshop. In the end, we ere given minimal information about sighning up for classes and worse of all, my group didn’t get any cookies.

Blood Drive- 10/6/09

This was the first tie I went to a blood drive, and I was surprised that this specific drive was fairly packed, and I ended up waiting on a line. However, I wasn’t surprised at the size of the forms I had to fill out and the questions they asked. Diseases spreading though blood transfusion’s always been a problem, especially with HIV.Usually I have a problem with needles, but what stung the most was the small blood sample they took rather than the actual extraction. They used some grotesque, staple-like item to prick my finger for the blood sample.

For the most part, it was a fun experience and i would do it again, except they scared my father half to death with a letter telling me I have AIDS and Hepatitis C and later apologizing because the test was a false positive.

Career Exploration: Basic Interviewing Techniques- 10/29/09

This was the workshop we went to when we were denied access to the personal enrichment. I think this was one of the most important workshops I went to.  We covered almost everything in this workshop. We learned how to dress, anticipate questions, prepare questions, manage anxiety and how to describe ourselves correctly when going to an interview. It helped me to see the importance of following all these steps. Overall it was helpful and effective.
