For this section I went to a workshop that talked about how to choose our major. It showed us the many different pressures and issues that affect a person’s choice of major such as family, religion, social background and many other factors. I found this workshop very helpful to me.
Career Exploration
For this section I went to the workshop called small talk. This workshop basically explained how small talk was a big part of daily life. It showed how many impressions are made about you from small talk. I enjoyed this workshop because it showed me that small talk is really a big deal.
Student Life
I went to the club fair with a few of my other classmates and we got to sample all of the different clubs at Baruch. It was very interesting to see the wide variety of activities that I could participate in at this school. I think my favortie part of this event was the fact that every different table had some kind of food they were giving out for free. Free food is always a plus.
Personal Enrichment: Mediating Conflict
It was quite ironic that the workshop delt with dealing with conflicts and resolving them. For the reason that from the very beginning there was an issue with the number of people who could attend it. Some of us, including myself, had registered for the workshop online. However, the moment we arrived to the room we were being told that the workshop was full and we would not be able to attend. In addition, a certain individual informed us that it was not necessary for us to register when we clearly did a few days ago. It turned out that they allowed more students in, exceeding the room’s capacity, and turned away the rest of the people. In the end there were students who were able to attend the workshop but who had not registered for it. In the worskshop the speaker encouraged us to speak to the person responsible for this and have our voices heard. She taught us that it is imperative that we communicate with one another when there is conflict and try to come to a solution. Overall, it is not good to simply let it fester and possibly grow bigger nor confront it in an aggressive manner.
Career Exploration: Impression Management
I attended this workshop knowing that it would help me in the career of my choice and at school. It was about how, we as students should start working on creating lasting impressions with our proffesors as wells as our peers. The first impression is always important and though it may not always be perfect we may have the opportunity to improve it or make it better. The speaker explained to us how we are consistently communincating to others how we feel whether its verbally or by our body language. With the power point presentation he was able to give us different pointers on how to assure that we make good impressions and develop lasting realationships that will be beneficial in our futures. One thing I definetly understood from this workshop is the importance of networking and how it can determine my success in the field of my choice. Towards the end he asked us to think of some challeges we may face in the upcoming spring semester and the first one I thought of was not having the people from my freshman block in my classes.
Where is the updated Schedule?
I can’t find it for the life of me
Personal Enrichment – Unemployment tops 10%
11/10/09 – There were four panelists at this discussion: David R.Jones, James Parrott, Robert C. Lieber, and Rae Rosen. I was actually surprised to find out that these are very affluent economists and politicians in New York City. The discussion was very intelligent, data-based, and entirely serious about the present unemployment situation in NYC. Parrott broke down the figures and pointed out that the black population suffers the most joblessness, and that the information industry is getting hit the hardest. Blue collar and low-wage jobs have been the most affected, and Jones commented that the stimulus packages that were sent out last year did not trickle down to the poorest in the city. Rosen’s prognosis was that the unemployment figures will not start improving until next year, even though GDP is already on the rise. She says that one way that we can improve the economy is by taking advantage of the demand in health and education jobs. Lieber weighed in on this too, saying that improvements in community colleges for poorer students will greatly contribute to equal opportunities for all. The discussion turned into quite a hot debate amongst the panelists when it came down offering solutions to these problems. When the floor was open to questions, one man criticized the panelists for not bringing up the problems from the supply side of the job market. The need to train entrepreneurs is just as important because when unemployment goes down, skilled workers need somewhere to find a job. It was a very good workshop because the panelists were not afraid to reveal a lot of good information from a professional/insider point of view.
Academic Enrichment
I went to a Resume Writing workshop that gave a fairly detailed explanation including examples plus a packet on how to write an acceptable resume. I found it quite knowledgeable and would use it to edit and update my own resume.
Community-Global Awareness
This one involved watching a film called “My Beautiful Laundrette”. The only thing is, we didn’t actually get to watch it because of technical difficulties. Nonetheless, the staff available signed our workshop books anyway.
Student Service Fair
I’ve got to admit, this was kind of fun. Basically, we went around the multipurpose room to different tables, asked questions and got our cards hole punched. It’s interesting to find that some of the staff at the table were quite funny and I learned about the many programs/centers that were offered.
