From the beginning of the semester, I was very interested in going to the Club Fair. When I discovered it was also part of the freshman seminar workshops, I thought it was a great opportunity to get started. When I arrived to the gymnasium it was so crowded you could hardly move. Since freshman convocation, I had an idea of which clubs I wanted to join. After listening to what they all had to offer and taking advantage of the snacks they were giving out, I signed up for three. The clubs included Asedom, Women in Business and Alfa, which was a business club mainly composed of latinos. I figured it would be helpful to join business related clubs because of my major in Marketing. Overall, the club fair was fun. The school’s radio station had a small “dance off” with the students, in where a few talented people performed different dance moves. It was nice to see everyone showing some school spirit and bonding in one way or another.
Student Life
I attended the club fair to complete this workshop. This was by far my favorite workshop. There was so much more freedom in this workshop in comparison to the others I attended. I had the opportunity to visit the clubs that catered to my likings. For all the other workshops I didn’t really have a choice to do things that liked. I also got candy from all the representatives of the clubs which was a huge plus. 🙂
Career Exploration
The workshop that I attended was directed towards getting internships and setting goals for your career path. It was excellent in what they had to offer and teach us, but I feel it was very dragged out. I had to sit and listen to a speech for two and a half hours. I honestly couldn’t wait to get out of there, I thought it would never end. I think ultimately this workshop would be much more successful if they just try and get through the required information in a timely fashion.
Academic Enrichment
I was particularly very unhappy with this workshop. It wasn’t the content because I did learn a lot about what requirements I am obligated to complete in order to get into the Zicklin school of business, which was very useful. But the workshop itself was very unorganized. I remember standing on a line behind about 1000 other freshman also trying to complete their workshops. They managed to squash all of us into the very small academic advisement office on the 5th floor. It was complete chaos, nobody knew what they were supposed to do we were all there for one reason; to get our books signed. Don’t get me wrong we wanted to learn from the workshop but it was the first workshop for most of us, so we basically just wanted to get the signature and go home.
Community-Global awarness
Due to being deferred I was unfortunately unable to give blood at the blood drive on October 16th. But I will talk about my previous experiences at blood drives because I have given blood twice before while I was in high school. The first time I volunteered to give blood I was extremely scared. I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. Honestly I was scared up until I was about half into the donation that i realized there was nothing to be scared of anymore the worst part was already over. So I started to think of the positive aspect of donating. How I was aiding this great organization and how I might be able to save a human life just by giving 2o minutes of my time to donate. About 2 months ago I got a call from a representative of the blood drive asking me to please come donate because they found a match. At that moment I really felt like I had made a difference in the world and put my time to good use. I was extremely proud of myself and I am really looking forward to going to more blood drives in the future.
Career Exploration – Interviewing Skills
I had planned to go to a different workshop which was “Mediating Conflicts and Resolving Disputes” however they were turning people away saying you needed to register so I went to the Interview workshop which was ironic because that was the one to you needed to register for which got me a little angry but anyway.. The interview workshop was very good and informative. The woman giving the presentation was very knowledge and gave good examples of questions we might come across during a interview. Such questions where “tell me about yourself” or “name some of your strengths or weaknesses”. I felt the weakness part was a bit hard because I am like everyone else who doesn’t really like to admit  that I have a weakness. I was a bit surprised that the workshop wasn’t boring which I was kind of expecting, so overall I felt the workshop was helpful.
Student Life
After working on a project, I went to the Club Fair to see what it was all about. I chose this workshop because I wanted to see what the life of a Baruch student was like. There were many new clubs that I discovered and found the workshop to be very informative. It made me feel more connected with my school and I was happy about that.
Arts at Baruch
For this fulfillment, I attended the art gallery in the 23rd st. building. We were shown a bunch of black and white images that were used to depict nature. Each picture was the photographer’s way of viewing the world. It was pretty cool to see the different perspectives that people have. I recommend you go check it out.
Career Exploration
I attended a workshop called Small Talk. Basically, it was a session where we learned how to speak to others and how to schmooze in a business like environment. In addition, we were taught how to properly eat in front of others. I found it pretty interesting and definitely feel that having this skill is a must in life. I recommend you check it out if they offer the workshop again.
Community Global Awareness
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to give blood for the blood drive. This was due to the fact that I was on antibiotics during that period in time. I normally like giving blood because it makes me feel like I am helping others. I plan to give blood in the next drive and expect to see all of you there.
