Diversity Career Summit

I attended this event with a few of my fellow classmates. Which was held on October 15, 2009 in room 7-150 during club hours in the Vertical Campus building. They brought alumnis and recruiters from three companies; Sponsor for Educational Opportunity (SEO), Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT), and In Roads. What I liked about the workshop was that they were offering paid internships and other opportunities for minorities. This made in a way motivated me because not a lot of companies offer many opportunities for minorities or even take interest. But of courseeeeeeeeee you either have to be a sophmore or upperclassmen. In a way this is good because it gives me something to look forward to as I progress but at the same time its like what do you have for ME.. AS A FRESHMAN…

the history event!!

Yesterday, I went to the Department of Black and Hispanic Studies And The Weissman School of Arts and Sciences event called The Changing Nature of Race, Power and Ethnicity in the era of Obama and Sotomayor. Although, I wasnt on time for the event because I was still in class I found it rather interesting. I loved the fact that they didnt glorify nor put down Obama of Sotomayor. The speakers discussed the leaders from both points of views, noting their accomplishments and at times they critiques.  My professor Dr.Fernandez invited the class to attend the event for extra credit. I went for the extra credit but also because I found the topic of interest. I like to see that the world is changing and that an African American, and Hispanic can be in power.  I hope to attend other events that the Department of Black and Hispanic studies has to offer. I wrote this blog a long time ago but for some reason i saved it as a draft but didnt publish it lol

Academic Enrichment workshop – SACC

I went to SACC for academic enrichment workshop on October 20th. It is a tutoring center that helps people who are having trouble with the work in the freshmen courses. There were less than ten people and honestly it was boring. Everything the girl mentioned were obvious and common sense. I am glad that took only thirty minutes and got my book signed again.

So I went to SACC for math after attending  the academic enrichment workshop. It was my first time there so I wasn’t familiar with the whole process. The tutoring was one hour long along with two other people Who I never seen. I have heard many things about SACC before and I have to say it definitely did help me. I went there for math and the tutor explained everything very well. She knew what she was doing and in that one hour I learned more from her than the math class. Hopefully I did well on the quiz because I went over exactly what was on it except one of them. I would come back to SACC next time for a quiz or test without a doubt because after going there, I have more confidence during my studies at home since I know what I am doing. Overall it was a good experience. I would go with a friend or two because it can get boring especially if you dont know anyone. I am also amazed to see how the tutor is able to teach two other people. She took her time and carefully explanined everything. Overall I am satisfied with SACC and would reccommend to a friend.

database survival

This workshop was called database survival and was in the library.  It was short and simple.  It was the shortest workshops out there and wasnt that boring.  At times, it was pretty useless but overall the workshop pointed out many key points in researching within baruch’s database.  He showed us many examples as well so it wasnt as if he just told us what to do and let us go.  It was quick and precise and there should be more of these quick tip workshops!

Gallery Tour:Nature of Landscape/Photography

This was one of the Arts @ Baruch held a while back. It was on the other side of the 23rd st. building in a small room. The lady that gave the tour was really nice, she took her time to explain each photograph even though the kids there were being so rude. It was a chance to view photographs taken in different people’s perspectives and each had their own story to it. We learned about the different photographers, the time period they lived and what their works symbolized. There was one striking photo that was supposed to represent hills or mounds but it was taken of nude buttocks. Others were interesting styles having hidden images. Overall it was quite an interesting event.

Sotomayor panel discussion

It has been a while but I guess I forgot to write about this event. It was an extra credit assignment for history but it turned out to be more than just that. There were about 5-6 professors at the panel discussion speaking on the topic of Obama and Sotomayor and racism. It was very insightful to hear the professors speak regarding the issues and it encouraged many of the audiences to contribute by asking questions and speak their mind. With Obama’s election and Sotomayor being the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice broke racial barriers that were unheard of back in the day and definitely gave power to the minorities everywhere. This was definitely worth going to.

Personal Relations

The personal relations workshop was very long and crouded. I guess it was in part because there are only a few of them during the semester. People were sitting on the floor simply because there were not enough chairs for everyone. The lady who was incharged of the workshop found ways to make it a bit interesting and for everyone to intereact. She made us go to the other side of the room and introduce ourselves to someone we never met before. It was deffinetly weird but I did undersand her point behind it. She emphasized the importance of social networking in school simply because you never know who knows who. I find that the tips she gave us were very helful and I will try to keep them in mind throughout my time in baruch.

Club Fair

The club fair was a lot fo fun. Eventhough it was really full and it was hard to move around the mood there was pretty amazing. I think in part it was because it was the beginning of the year and everyone was excited about the different clubs and activities. I signed up for a couple of clubs, i signed up for the ecuadorian club and the dance club. Im expecting for them to be a lot of fun. One of my favorite things there was the fact that they gave candy and chocolate haha.

Study Abroad Fair

The study abroad fair was interesting. Idefinetly learned a lot there, I was not even aware you could take a semester in so many places. I did not even know where to start, there were many tables full of pamphelts with information for all this different countries all over the world. The people in charged were very niced and they answered all our questions. There was also the finantial adivisor there who let us know how to apply for finantial aid. I was interested in couple of different countries in Europe I would like to have the opportunity to study in. The opportunity seems amazing.

this was the first workshop. When we gathered for the workshop, there were lots and lots of students gathered on the floor.I really did not know where to go.Then finally we got sitted .It was a quick one.The instructors just explained us the couse requirements for our majors and minors. So except the bumpy start,it was helpful. It hepled us with one of the very basic needs-subject choice.
