I attended this conference about racism which was recommended strogly by our history professor. The besy part of workshop was that it dealt with some good questions from the students from differen ethnic groups.I myself is Asian-and thus a part of minority and racism.I did not have to face this situation because I am new to US but I can connect myself to the situation. There were other professors as well partcipating in the speech.Tyhe problem was we couldnt hear much because the room was small and over-populated.we had to sit on the foor and our views were blocked.Thi sworkshop was also very long. One problem with such workshop is I feel uncomfortable to talk about racism. The more we talk about it,the more I feel that we are screaming to the world that we are different.I think everybodi belongs to a group-that is how God made us.We should be proud of our features and respect other’s.As far as I have known from history, racism is just using the difference to gain political and economical advantages by some people.I do not think our generation really differentiates. So I would really want to stop discussing such issues and educate people more. Most of all,if we are aware of who we are,no one can humilate us.Still,I am new in USA and my view point night not apply practically to the situation. One thing discussed in the conference that I really liked was-we do not want to sign in forms that asks to indicate out ethinicity. Our name and other details should be enough for indentification. When I attended the conference I did not know it was a workshop but later on when I knew,I got stamped by our professor.
library workshop
I was late for the library workshop so I attended two sessions. We were taught how to use the database and how to seach appropiately. It helped a lot because before this I just knew how to search using Ebco host. The library session was hsort but it was effectiv eand had flexibilty of time.the librarians were friendly. So overall it was a good experience.
Career workshop
I attended the career workshop. It was the longest amongst all th eworkshops we had.It was helpful because we got to know all about internships and its requirements. As a freshman,it had added pressure since it compelled me to think about my future responsibities. It is so hard to think or visualise the day when I would be working (paid hopefully). But I can imagine alll thetroubles and worries I have to go through for getting an offer. Therefore I am looking forward to join the resime wokshop(how to write one) and then takea few tours of the Staarr to equip myself for the internship.
mishkin gallery
This, so far, has been my favorite workshop. It was basically just a tour of the art gallery, but I am a sucker for stuff like that, and I really enjoyed it. It was really cool to see that there were even a few abstract pieces and stuff in there. However, I feel they should run these things way more efficiently… I had to wait because the tours were delayed, and there was a HUGE line to get your book signed.I, again, didn’t get my book signed, though. The line was too long and I had to run to get to my next class in time. I really hope I don’t get failed for this. Sorry, Holdyn!
english class
I felt so bad about English class today. We had an article due and only two people brought the article to class. Everyone said that they couldnt open the pdf file. Professor Sims looked at us with this look, like i know your lying look and eventually said class is over. At first I thought it was just a joke, but she really cancelled class. I felt so bad because Professor Sims is like one of our nicest teachers, and it felt like we took advantage of her.. So saddd
Database Survival
This past week I attended a workshop tittled Database Survival for academic Enrichment. I thought the workshop was quite interesting and helpful, starting for the fact that it was not too long made me have a good attitude about it. As the instructor began i realized that what he was saying with regards to how to use the schools database was very helpful. He gave us some good tips about how to start a search. I think it was a productive workshop that I can take advantage from.
Obama and Sotomayor
This workshop hosted by professor Fernandez was a great debate topic regarding racism and how we view it in society today. There were many interesting points made in the speeches and was a very informative workshop allowing me to understand certain race related issues better.
personal enrichment workshop
About two weeks ago i went to a seminar about maintaining relationships while in college. It wasnt that bad because we met a couple of new people there as well. She made us do activities which actually made us meet other kids and although i thought it was stupid, i did meet one or two people that i still talk to, so it wasnt useless. It was one of the better workshops.
SACC
I went to SACC on Tuesday, pretty much it is just like a tutoring center that helps you with your work. There were only 6 people there so it was quiet at first until 3 annoying kids came in shouting out randomly and hitting on the lady on front. It seems useful, but I don’t know if i would ever need to go. It went pretty fast, all she did was explain common sense thing that we already know, such as active reading and listening. She made us practice using an article about our tongue with soda and what causes the fizz. Overall it was kind of useless, just went to get my book signed.
Google Workshop
Yesterday I went to the workshop they had in the library that was about how to do research. It was kind of interesting. Some of the things we were told were very useful. For example, using quotes in google searches changes a lot of the results you find. It wasn’t an awful workshop mainly because it was so short. The two hour one tomorrow, however, is going to be the most awful form of torture one can tolerate.
