This week I went to Obama and Sotomayor discussion panel . The discussion panel was held by my history professor as well as other history professors discussing about the idea of racism. Since it was extra credit, I figure it wouldn’t hurt to hear what people had to say about the controversy. It lasted well about two hours and while most of the people there brought up excellent points, it was a bit too long. I am glad people are discussing about the issue because even though Obama was elected as the President, there is still a racial issue towards the blacks and hispanics out there. We need to grow up and treat everyone equally because we are in the twenty first century. This is not the fiftys and America has had its period of treating people unequally. There will always be people out there that will create terror to the society and not all of them are blacks and hispanics. In fact there are whites and asians who are involve to. We can’t look down upon a racial group of people but only the person itself. Overall I am glad i stayed because not only was I able to get extra credit but I got my book signed as well. .
Community-Global awareness workshop
racial workshop
On October 14th i went to the Racial workshop helped by my history professor, Johanna Fernandez, and many other professors. The discussion and view points of many of what the professors and audience said is fascinating. The most fascinating thing i heard was that if we were to eliminate racism, there would be something to take its place to divide us like social class, hobby, hair, or religion still. The idea of Obama being half black and half white also came to my mind when he was still running for elections. Although they said its a controversial idea for a black man to become president, the fact still lies that he is also part Caucasian. Overall i found the discussion very informative that i can relate to.
SACC Workshop
So today was an ‘Academic Enrichment’ workshop from the SACC. I originally thought it was about the tutoring center in general but turns out the workshop was about how to read actively. I think it was pretty pointless and a waste of time because they went over very basic things that everyone should know by now. We went over taking notes, how to actively listen, and read. It was so dead in there because only about 8 people showed up. The lady was pretty enthusiastic even though no one cared. There was a VERY annoying fat kid that wouldn’t shut up from the moment he came in late. He walked in with his buddies and kept interrupting everything she said and even flirted with the lady at one point…she wasn’t very good looking. Anyways, got the stamp and that was that.
Workshop
I went to the SACC workshop earlier, I thought it was pretty boring. There was only about 8 or so people in the workshop. The instructor was going over stuff that was pretty obvious, but at least I got a signature from it. I also went to the discussion about Obama and Sotomayor, I thought that it was pretty interesting. I left the discussion before I got the signature.
Obama and Sotomayor Discussion Panel
I attended the discussion panel on October 14th and I thought it was really interesting on the topic of how many people use race to define everyone and use it as a way to differentiate people from one another. I thought it was interesting that if we were able to remove the idea of using race to divide people that we would need to come up with something that would replace it however it wouldn’t be possible as of now. I think that although we don’t like the idea of stereotyping and generalizing because of one’s race, we still do it anyways. For example, on the first day of class, a student would look around and they would generalize based on their classmatess’ appearances and sit with whoever they feel most comfortable with, based on race. Race is inevitable. I found that the discussion was very interesting and informative. I hope to attend more discussion panels such as this one. 🙂
Workshops
So far I have gone to a total of 4 workshops. I thought that I was not going to enjoy them, but they turned out to not be that bad.
Academic Advisement Session 10/14/09
Hello Everyone,
I would like for everyone who was in attendance today at the Academic Advisement Session to blog about the session. This is pretty open so you can pretty much talk about anything you liked about it, something new that you learned, something you still would like to find out, etc. All you have to do is blog, comment, and share what you learned today.
Don’t forget to categorize your blog post under Academic Enrichment. (You will see this option on the right hand side of the ‘Add New Post’ section of the blog.
Also, for those of you who missed the session or showed up very late, please read the posts of your peers and ask them and myself questions becuase you really missed a lot of great information regarding registration.
Remember that attendance is part of your grade, a large part.
Thank guys, and blog away!

Drop it or Keep it?
Okay, I’m in a total different block from you guys, however I also have a very unfair professor for my calculus class. I got my exam back today and saw my grade, and I was appalled. I reviewed the test and saw that many of my answers were correct. After that, I reviewed the following issues about my exam grade, She took off [full credit] because she says “You ‘fudged’ the answer”
I looked back at my work and I saw my process was correct and skipped a step because I was rushing, I still arrived at the right answer and before I could defend myself , my professors tells me “You fudged the answer, etc etc”
I don’t even know what she means by the term “fudge” but it seems that I might not be able to pass this course if the professor continues to disrespects the students. Yes, we all asked and complained and she wouldnt even give us a min to explain.
So tell me, should I drop this class and take it next semester or keep it until my next test and see what my fate takes me later?
Managing Relationships in College
the first time i tried to go to this workshop, it was cancelled without warning, so this time, i finally made it. the speaker was boring… it was pretty hard to keep myself awake for that long. i feel like i do just fine in terms of managing my family and romantic relationships, but the information about managing professional and business related relationships was kind of useful. overall, felt this workshop, like all the others i went to so far (except club was) was useless.
shoot! i forgot to get my book signed. i hope that i don’t get in trouble for that. my bad!
club fair and classes!!
Club fair was kind of boring at first but once me and Caitlin walked around it was cool. I previously joined CSA, I defintely love that club. The best part was the dance even though the music kept getting stopped, it involed everyone… Classes are going well, history isnt that bad after all she actually gives us the questions for her quizzes which is great. Baruch is going great, college isnt that bad after all just time CONSUMING..
