I found this workshop to be the worst workshop that I went to. First off, the topic of managing relationships was not so appealing to me. I don’t need advice or tips on how to be socially active. Second, they basically forced us to interact with eachother and mingle, which was awfully awkward. Third, everything that the speaker was saying came as common sense or old news to me. I didn’t enjoy this workshop at all and I’m just glad I got my signature for the credit.
Managing Relationships in College
Gallery Tour
The gallery was somewhat interesting. I mostly just walked around, took a quick peek at each piece and just talked to my friends. I was really tired and out of it so I didn’t want to stay there long. I just wanted the signature on my sheet. But I did see some pieces that were pretty cool. I always enjoyed going to museums and looking at art. I love the MoMa and if you didn’t know, CUNY students get to go for free!
Diversity Workshop
The diversity workshop was basically about what its called, diversity. This workshop talked about how diversity is a positive thing that unites people of different races. They elaborated on the fact that Baruch is the most diverse college in the nation and that it should not affect how we treat eachother. I’ve been used to diverse schools because my high school was also very diverse and culturally engaged.
The Changing Nature of Race, Power and Ethnicity in the era of Obama and Sotomayor
I found this to be quite an interesting workshop. First, there were professors who talked about the issue of race and its effect on people today and how it is changing. Then, it turned into a group discussion where students talked about their own issues and what they think about race in the world today. Some students who were sharing their stories really had interesting things to say. I only came to this workshop at first for the extra credit that my history teacher proposed to us by coming to this workshop, but I later found that it was worthwhile because it somewhat enlightened me.
Career Exploration
This was an ok workshop. I already knew our school was really diverse, coming from a high school which was dominated by Italians, but I didn’t know how diverse we were compared to the rest of the colleges and universities out there. I for one love learning about new cultures, so this workshop kind of made me realize that I have made the right choice on the college I picked. It is also good because this can probably help me later in my career, as I would love to go into a field similar to foreign trade and business.
Club Fair
The club fair was PACKED! There were a lot of people running around from club to club but there were a lot of people crowding around the dance club. There were kids dancing in the middle of the crowd and I even got to see 2 of my friends pop and lock. Although it was hard to see over the many people that were there, it was fun watching my friends, especially when he did the jerk. I got free thai iced tea by just saying i love thai iced tea to a bunch of sorority girls, how nice. And towards the end, I signed up for the Japan Club. But I haven’t showed up to a single one of their club meetings, no time to spare.
Freshman Reception
This workshop was not helfpful whatsoever. The place was completely packed because they had said they did not expect so many freshmen to show up. All that happened was we got our sheets signed, got free lemonade and chocolate chip cookies and left. But hey, I don’t mind, as long as I fulfilled my workshop, I’m satisfied.
Managing Relationships in College
Another seemingly pointless workshop I just went to to get a signature. It was really overcrowded and there was a point where we had to introduce ourselves to someone we had never met before, which is never fun. I for one can’t really stand meeting new people, and when I am somewhere I have never been before I tend to just keep to myself, so this workshop was especially awkward. I’m pretty much a loner.
Blog in place of Global Awareness
Okay, so here’s my long blog to replace my global awareness workshop.
the five workshops i’ve attended have all been pretty boring. i’ve learned the do’s and don’t’s of google, the way to score a decent internship, and how to and NOT to handle relationships. i’ve seen the art gallery, and i’ve gotten a taste of nearly every club in baruch college. all of this, though, regardless of how boring i may have found it, has enhanced my learning experience more than i may have expected. as stupid as it sounds, these workshops have helped me learn ways to keep awake and focus my attention on something that may not have caught my interest right away.
i do, however, feel that the club fair was a very useful workshop. the club fair had led me to join clubs that i didn’t even know the school had. if i did not attend, i would’ve never known we had a music industry club, nor would i have known about our photography club. it also encouraged me to join two of baruch’s most well-known organizations, WBMB radio and the ticker. both of those clubs are things i truly enjoy being a part of, and i would not be a part of them if i did not attend the club fair.
i also feel that the tour of the mishkin gallery was a great workshop. while it may not be very useful, it is something i definitely enjoyed. i am a photography minor, which is a form of art, and photography has led me to have a great appreciation for art. i never knew we even had an art gallery, and this workshop showed me something great that i could admire right in our very school.
furthermore, i feel that, overall, the workshops weren’t as terrible as i had anticipated. as much as i hated some, i did benefit from going to them, and i am very glad that i did.
Gallery Tour
The gallery tour was kind of interesting for me. Ever since I was little I have been one to appreciate art so this workshop wasn’t as boring for me as the other ones where. I used to draw a lot. It was nice to actually look at things rather than listening to someone talk for a long time. However, my main incentive was still to just get a signature.
