This workshop, I went to because our history teacher offered extra credit to go listen to her speak. Definately need the extra boost in grade with her crazy weekly quizzes. They were just speaking about their hispanic department. They were persuading people to join? It lasted much longer than expected and i didn’t want to leave like the others and be rude so I listened to the entire thing.

Career Exploration-Career Planning: Impression Management

I actually attempted to attend an earlier workshop of the same topic, but that one was unexpectedly can canceled without any change made to the online calendar.  My successful attempt saw a representative from the Starr Career Development Center give a lecture on the benefits and resources of the department.  She was a firm proponent of taking an initiative with one’s college career while pushing her department’s ability to guide students through their careers in things like internships and business relationships.  The representative also talked about the importance of a first impression, and a lasting impression, and how one should manage themselves during an interview, during a business lunch, or any important formal and social situation.  It was a good workshop, and though I plan to take a path in Liberal Arts, it showed me the value that a business school can teach to a student of any vocation.

Arts at Baruch-Gallery Tour

The Gallery Tour I went to was titled “Mercedes Matter:  A Retrospective.”  It was the last workshop I attended, and seeing as it is near the tail-end of the semester, I could tell that everyone, from the students to the organizers, was starting to get tired of the need for workshops.  The tour was rushed from start to finish, and one of the staff even made jokes about the nature of the enrichment workshop program.  On a positive note however, the building that the gallery was held in looked great, and its existence just added to the prestige of the school.  I could understand the lack of focus on the Arts in a business school, but shoehorning in the need for lackluster workshops can’t be helping in any way.

Academic Enrichment-Library Workshop

The Library Workshop was actually very informative; I learned the whats, whens, and wheres of the library’s helpful offerings to the student body.  Navigating the library afterward was also much easier, as they helped define each section of the building.  It was a great look at the value the school had with the amount of resources available both physically and through things such as the online databases.  The study pods are an immense help; I used one for an all-nighter and it was a very good station to do work in a quiet, isolated environment where you need to think for yourself.  I haven’t personally used the rented laptops, but many people have called them lifesavers.  Overall, I see myself using the library so much these next few years, and learning about its ins-and-outs was a valuable experience.

Student Services Fair

On the 13th of October i participated in the Student Services Fair.  Unfortunately i forgot to blog about it right afterwards and im stuck here trying to remember the night before the sheet is do.  Basically it was kind of similar to the club fair in a way.  There was a bunch of different tables or stations set up with services from the school at each one.  Basically you just walked around and looked at all of the different tables and saw what you might find useful.

Big Panel Presentation

It was a while back, but on the 10th of september im pretty sure it was i went to a workshop about careers with a couple friends.  It was all the way up on the 14th floor and there was a few diferent speakers.  Basically they all talked about the steps you should take as a college student to get a good job.  Also how to have a good interview and also having the perfect resume.  It was a while back but i thought it was a helpful workshop.  But it might be better for juniors and seniors

Student Life-Freshman Reception

The first workshop I attempted to attend was the Academic Enrichment Freshmen Reception session.  However, upon arrival I found out that they had run out of room and out of folders to hand out; one of the organizers said that they had not anticipated such a large turnout.  They offered to sign everyone’s books and told everyone to return the following Monday when they would have extra folders to hand out.  Though I didn’t get to be part of the actual session, the experience did open my eyes to the new level of responsibility I would have to my academic career going forward.  Nevermind the winding road I had to take in order to fix my Freshman Seminar class–I knew that I had to take initiative with all my requirements from then on.
