Art Workshop

So the Art workshop was very different. First of, it wasnt in school but in a gallary which is kind of neat. Im not a very artistic nor creative person but i actually enjoyed it a little. It was fun looking a the different pieces of art and imagining what the artist was trying to show in their work of art. Nevertheless art is not my thing, problably because I am not a very creative person and im just jealous of them!

Career exploration workshop – Resume Writing

This week I went to a resume workshop with fellow classmates. At first we went to the wrong room but luckily we were able to get in to the right room. The workshop was basically about creating a resume and the do’s and dont’s on a resume. I have learned this before in my high school so it was not anything new but hearing it over refreshes the memory.  The presenter was very knowledgeable about the topic and mentioned many of the things that was very helpful.  The workshop was only an hour long but we were about fifteen minuite late so it felt even shorter. The take home things I got from the workshop was always do more than asked for. I am surprised alot of people came even though some were day dreaming and only came for only one thing. Overall, this workshop definitely brought back alot of stuff I forgot over time and it was great that it did.

Arts workshop

So the art workshop was different.  We got to explore some art pieces.  Someone who likes art wouldve enjoyed it, but I am not an art person so it was an okay experience.  There were many different types of art and some were very creative.   It is nice to just look at all of the works and figure out what the artist was trying to portray.

Career exploration workshop

So i went to the career exploration workshop called Internship and Goal Setting.  I think this workshop was the most beneficial workshop Ive been to.  It was very helpful and very informative.  The person conducting the workshop was the internship coordinator.  She was very helpful and showed us many tips to how to get a head start on internships.  I guess because I planned on getting an internship, i found it very helpful as I now know what to do and where to start when Im ready.  It was long, but efficient!

Arts at Baruch – Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective

The gallery tour was pretty good. I had no idea that the gallery is actually dedicated to the artwork of an artist named Mercedes Matter. The gallery was organized from the art she made beginning from her childhood till her final years. It was interesting when the tour guide mentioned how many of us are creative as children but lose it as we grow up because we become more self-conscious about creating works that look realistic. Mercedes was able to maintain her creativity and express it in still life paintings. They do not look like anything in particular but it was very abstract, different, creative, and expressive, which is really what art represents. The tour guide said that the larger paintings can cost up to $85,000 because not everyone would want to buy an artwork of realistic images that you can see everyday but an image where a person’s creativity is expressed in a unique way. It was a great workshop overall and it was nice to look at the different artworks.

Career Exploration – Internship & Goal Setting

Someone from the Starr Career Development Center came to talk about the basics of internships for this workshop. Most of the information can be found on the website www.baruch.cuny.edu/careers. Finding internships are pretty convenient because you can just set up a resume online and check for the options available to you. Some internships are paid while others are not but some internships can also give you college credits. She emphasized that not many internships are available for freshmen but it was helpful to learn about it ahead of time. I will definitely consider an internship when I am not a freshman anymore.

Academic Enrichment – Database Survival

For this workshop, it lasted for only half an hour but it felt pretty long to me. A lady talked about the databases available in the school’s library website and the terms we can use to help us narrow our searches and find whatever we need more efficiently. We already learned most of this in English class. It was not very interesting but it was helpful and organized since there was a helper who assisted the people there.

Community-Global awareness – Changing Nature of Race, Power, and Ethnicity

The workshop was a discussion about how the Era of Obama and Sotomayor can impact diversity in the United States. I personally do believe that they can bring positive changes because they represent a part of the population that has not been represented enough throughout history. It is important to know that the United States needs this change because the number of minorities continues to rise rapidly. Minorities should be able to have equal power not only because of the large numbers of people they represent but also because political power should not vary depending on race.

My First Freshman Seminar Enrichment Workshop

This blog post is about the Freshman Reception back in September that goes under the category “Student Life”. Basically like what everyone else said, it was very crowded and they divided everyone into smaller groups in separate classrooms. There were not enough booklets for everyone so some lady just quickly explained the material that was in the booklet. She focused mostly on informing us what classes to take for certain degrees. It was nothing that was relatively new to me. But then one day, I found myself around the Academic Advisement Center so I just conveniently picked up the booklet that I could not get that day and some other lady explained to me more briefly about what the booklet contained, specifically about Tier 3 Minors, which I found pretty useful overall.
