Career Planning : Interviewing

This is probably the most helpful workshop I attended. This workshop provided me with some very helpful information on interviewing. Most of the information I had already heard, but attending this workshop just reinforced what I already knew. They provided us with interviewing tips, on what to do and not to do in an interview. I think this workshop is definitely one that I think should be made mandatory and I encourage everyone to attend. It’s very helpful, especially since we are all prospective employees that will have to be interviewed sooner or later.

Arts at Baruch- Mishklin gallery

Out of all the workshops I have to say this one is probably the workship I disliked the most. To start off, as I see many people have complained, the waiting time was ridiculously long. One would expect that with such a long wait the workshop must be really good. I guess its because everyone was trying to fulfill their Arts at Baruch requirement. The gallery itself was nice, but I found the workshop to be quite pointless. They walked us around for like 10 minutes showing us the artwork of Mercedes, and although the art was nice, I think they could’ve gave us a better workshop that we can actually get something out of.

Freshman Seminar

I think the freshman seminar course was very helpful.  Not only were the instructors very nice and pleasant to be in a room with, but they provided the class with very helpful information.  Before this class, I actually had a pretty general idea of what Baruch was all about, since I had already taken a course here.  But there were a lot of tips and suggestions that were provided to us by the instructors in the freshman seminar class about how to get around, studying, time management, joining clubs etc.  I also think the scheduling of having the class every two weeks is also great!

Arts at Baruch:Mishklin Gallery

I attended the Mishklin Gallery Tour of Mercedes.  My first impression was not a very good one since the wait on the line took forever.  The tour itself was very short, so it was a little upsetting to be on a line for such a long time for a 15 minute tour.  I am not a very big fan of art, but I thought the gallery itself was interesting.  The pieces of art of Mercedes were very unique, and I think it was a good idea to have this gallery as a workshop.   I would definitely recommend, though, that the actual tour should be a little bit more worth the wait.

Personal enrichment

In this personal enrichment workshop, I learned a few helpful techniques that I actually used later on after the workshop. This workshop was about stress relief. At the beginning of the workshop the psychologist had us examine a raisin. We had to examine the raisin using all of our six senses. This was a part of mindful meditation. After this exercise I felt relaxed and calm. My favorite part of the workshop was learning steps of how to handle stressful situations using the word DEARMAN. This acronym gives you steps to follow to analyze and solve stressful situations. At the end of the workshop I was able to channel my inner senses by focusing my attention on inner tension and relieving them through calm exercises. This was an overall great workshop that eveyone should of attended.

Using & Evaluating the Web for Research

This academic enrichment workshop took place in the library on November 4 from 12:45 to 1:15.  This workshop was very informative because it taught me things about the different search engines online that i never heard of before.  Most of the websites that students get information off of are inaccurate and biased.  For example, Samspade.org allows you to check if a website is registeres with the government.  Besides samspade, the intsructor also showed us a list of websites that are good to find information and legit.  A good website used for school is Google Scholars.  I actually started to use this search engine after this workshop.

Club Fair

My first initial thought about the club fair was that it was really packed.  The line to sign in was really long  and unorganized.  When I first got into the gymnasium it was really difficult to walk around, but when I met up with my friends we were able to push our way around.  The first club that I saw was ASEDOM.  The members were very excited to have freshmans join their club.  Although I learned alot about NABA, VITA, and ASEDOM, I didnt feel ready to join any clubs because I was too overwhelmed with my classes.  I enjoyed the free stuff the clubs gave out like the Apple inc. bag, shot glasses from The Ticker, and candy.  My favorite part about the club fair was the dancing and performances.  Hopefully I will join a club in my second semester.

Personal Enrichment OMBUD

I went to this personal enrichment workshop hoping that it won’t really take almost two hours. The first thing I did when the workshop started was to try and find a seat because the place was overcroweded. When it finally started someone from OMBUD came and talked about how students could deal with issues in Baruch. If they feel upset about their grades and their professors being unfair to them, they can go to OMBUD and get it sorted out. But if you got a F on your exam and it was your fault, you can’t just go to OMBUD and tell them its the professor’s fault. You need to back it up with something. But overall, this workshop was great because I got to meet some nice people and learn new ways to make my life at Baruch easier.

personal enrichment workshop

I was very excited to participate in this workshop. I learned about setting your priorities straight and picking you major. The two guys explains in terms of slides about how to determine what you want to do in your life. We did numerous activities to show what we might like to major in the future. I found these activities quite helpful to me. I was leaning towards accounting in the activity. Hopefully I will stay with this major and pursue it.

Resume Writing

Today was my last Freshman Seminar.  It was a career exploration seminar about writing a resume.  It was very informative, and I learned a lot.  I learned some useful tips about writing resumes, like the fact that it should only be one page.  I also learned about cover letters, which I think will be useful.
