This Career Exploration workshop took place on November 5th in room 3-165 from 12:50-2:20. My first impression on it was that they took t hings very seriously and professional. Anyone that came late was not allowed. Throughout the workshop we learned that first impressions are everything. We understood that actions speak louder than words, and that could affect you in an interview. We were assigned to judge the person on how he or she looks like. I enjoyed the workshop. The presenter spoke very loudly and clearly. I left with a very strong self confidence.
Career Planning: Impression Management 11/5
Club Fair – 9/24/09
The Club Fair was very crowded and there was a very long line to get in. I did find the table for the Italian Club and I joined it. I had gone around the entire room before I actually found it and it took a while but I already knew the secretary of the club so I just looked for her. It was a bit crazy in there.
Arts at Baruch – 10/13/09
I thought that this workshop was a bit boring and also pointless. I really don’t like art that much. The funny think that happened though was that the lady who directed the tour told us not to touch the walls when we looked at the artwork, so I told my friend that it was probably so she wouldn’t have to paint the walls, as a joke. Then, like 30 seconds later she said it was so she wouldn’t have to paint the walls so much. That was basically the highlight of my tour, and als0 making fun of some of the artwork. It’s nothing personal, I just don;t like art.
Basic Interviewing Techniques Workshop – 11/12/09
I thought this was the best workshop out of all of them. It was extremely helpful to learn about how to prepare for a job interview. In the future, I will definately go to one of these workshops again when the time comes closer for me to start interviewing for jobs. This workshop also taught me more about the Starr Career Development Center, which has so many resources that help students get jobs. Also, since there we so many career workshops to attend, it was much easier to pay attention with a small amount of students in the audience.
Resume Writing and Cover Letter – 10/27/09
This was the most informative and helpful workshops that I’ve been to yet. It was basically guideline of do’s and don’ts for writing a resume. Since I have no real work experience, I was curious to know how I would go about preparing my resume. Fortunately, they discussed the functional resume, which works for those of us who don’t have any real work experience. They also provide us with student guide that gave us powerful words to use and a sample cover letter. I definitely recommend this workshop to anyone who is struggling with getting their resume together or simply has any questions.
Gallery Tour – 10/13/09
For the “Arts at Baruch” workshop, I went to a Gallery Tour at Sidney Mishkin Gallery. The tour was based on landscapes. We went through each piece of art and our tour guide talked a bit about the technique that the artist used or the symbolism of the art work. One piece that I remember was of a icicles on a wooden fence. There were two representations of the icicles. One was a greyscale larger piece; the other was a smaller version, in a completely blue hue. I didn’t realize that they were both the same image, just with different effects, until our tour guide pointed it out. That was one of the interesting things that stood out to me. Art is always full of creativity, which is why I enjoyed taking the time to attend this tour!
Light the Night Walk – 10/15/09
This has got to be one of the best events that I’ve taken part in since I’ve been at Baruch. I volunteered at the Light the Night Walk, which was Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Despite the fact that it rained the entire time, it was amazing to see just how many people still came out to give their support. It felt great to be a part of such an important cause. As a volunteer, I helped assemble the lit balloons and distribute them. Each color of the balloon represented different things. The red balloons were for supports, the white balloons were for survivors, and the gold balloons were in memory of loved ones. This was truly a wonderful experience and I’m very thankful that I got to help out.
Managing Relationships – 10/8/09
This workshop dealt with the how we handle relationships while adjusting to college life. The speaker talked about the new freedoms that come with being in college and how this impacts our relationship with our parents. For me, personally, I feel like trust is what determines how much the relationship between parents and their child change. If there is already a sense of trust there, then there shouldn’t be any grave concern over how the child will behave in college. Another type of relationship that the speaker addressed was an actual relationship. I remember her mentioning how some people might find it difficult adjusting to not seeing their close friends of their significant others no a daily basis. I can definitely relate to this because it has taken some adjusting for me to get use to the fact that I won’t be able to speak to my friends everyday. Overall, the workshop provided very basic information and was simple to understand.
Study Abroad Fair – 9/17/09
Even though I’m not really planning to study aboard anytime soon the Study Aboard Fair was very interesting. The fair had informations table with pamphlets and posters and even candy! They had so many different options for all types of majors. They had programs available from China to Australia, which I thought was pretty cool. It even made me consider spending a semester abroad. I ended up leaving with a few pamphlets from universities in France and Spain.
