Career Exploration: Interviewing Skills

This workshop was extremely helpful because I learned a lot of things that i hadn’t known before about interviews. I did know majority of the stuff but there was also information that i didn’t.

Basically, the lady gave us tips/advice on how to have a successful interview. I learned about what employers look for while they’re interviewing you and the way you should dress. I had no idea that guys shouldn’t wear black to an interview because it looks like they’re going to funeral or prom, so I learned something new there. She also said that we shouldn’t wear clothing or even jewelry that distracts the interviewer. I also didn’t know that most of the impression that’s left on them is based on non-verbal contact which is why its important to present yourself in a professional manner. Having a firm(but not too firm) handshake is also important.

She talked about different sources we could use in order to find internships. She also put a lot of emphasis on doing research and knowing about a certain company before you go for an interview to show that you are interested. Your body language also says a lot about how interested you are in the job.

One thing i didn’t know that i learned was the fact that you should send a thank you letter after the interview. It’s pretty much common courtesy and shows the interviewer that you appreciate them taking out the time to interview you.

She also told us that after the interview, we should remember the important dates so that in case they forget to call, we can call them and ask what happened, whether the position was given to someone else or not.

I do recommend this interview to others especially if you’ve never been to an interview before. It really helps you understand what you should and shouldn’t do in an interview.
