Academic Enrichment 9/17/2009

I did not get to experience the actual purpose of this workshop. There were so many students and no places set up for us to go. When we finally settled in small lecture hall, the instructor just told us how she did not expect this many students to show up. The instructor continued to talk about how she didn’t have enough cookies for us to eat and just signed our books.
There was too many things going on for anyone to get settled in this workshop. I had to get out of my comfort zone to fight through the crowd of people to get my book signed. Overall this workshop was just a big mess. I would like to recommend this workshop only if I knew what it is suppose to be about.

Arts at Baruch

the art tour was great. It was basically about the photography of nature. We mostly saw photographs by Marilyn Bridges which she took all her pics by bird’s eye view. We also saw some of Robert Schaefer Jr’s pictures. The picture was all blue and it probably resembles how nature could be cold or have reflections.

the thing i liked about this tour was that we got to a picture where there were four butts because it also represented a landscape. There were four nude people lying down, two men and two women. Michael thought it was all women hahahahahas xP.  There was another picture i liked where there was a camel stuck in the middle of it because it was trying to represent it was from birds eye view and can be seen by God’s point of view.

Career Planning: Resume Writing 10/27/09 @ 12:30 – 2:30

This workshop was on how to write a resume. My goals before attending this workshop were: to learn how to write a correct resume and what to put into it and how. It was a really informative workshop because not only did it accomplish my goal but it also gave me more information. They taught us how to write a cover letter and a thank you letter. They also gave us this entire booklet on how to write a resume and words we should use when trying to attract a possible employer.

I selected this particular workshop because I realized that I don’t have a resume, and that is something that is quite important. Whenever I go job hunting, a lot of these big stores and etc. ask for a resume and I automatically dismiss that opportunity because I never made one or knew how to make an effective one. This workshop didn’t really take me out of my comfort zone. We didn’t participate or interact much, it was mostly just learning. Although, I did feel weird when I realized that a lot of people in the room already had resumes, and I was one of the few that did not have one. So, I guess in a way I did feel a bit out of my comfort zone.

Overall, this workshop met all my goals and even helped me learn more than I expected. I would definitely recommend this to other people. I never visited the STARR career development center, and ever since I took this workshop I’ve been trying to go visit them more often for career opportunities. They also send emails about internships and jobs. Along with learning about how to write a resume, I also learned more about the STARR career center. It was a great workshop.

The Nature of Landscape Photography

Undoubtedly, this was the most memorable workshop out of the four I attended thus far. I did not have high expectations for this workshop due to my lack of interest for art/photography and my appalling experiences with past workshops. However, I was astonished after my tour throughout the minuscule, yet striking museum. A majority of the photographs were eye-catching in terms of its scope and color. The photos shot from an aerial view were absolutely exquisite. The natural landscapes were breathtaking and epic even from a 16 by 20 inch frame. It truly impels us to reconsider our awareness and perception of the nature we take for granted.

My enjoyment of the workshop was further enhanced by the members of my tour group. At the time, I felt uncomfortable with the students in my block due to my timidity in new environments. However, the workshop helped me create new friendships within my block which I will never regret. I coincidentally encountered Agnes, Brain, Fariyah, Jeffrey, and Dev (just simply awesome, awesome friends) at the museum and had a great time touring with them. It was amusing discussing the attributes and themes of each photo especially the one with the “mountains.” Lol In conclusion, I attained a new appreciation and respect for artistic photography and my colleagues through this workshop. 🙂

Basic Interviewing

I went to the Career Planning: Basic Interviewing workshop on Thursday, October 29, 12:50pm – 2:20pm in VC 1-107.  The workshop was pretty useful, as it covered many important aspects to think about when going for an interview.  The goals of the workshop were to prepare students for an interview.  It taught us all of the basic things remember, such as how to dress, and it also taught us about some important things to say when being interviewed.  I will definitely have this workshop in mind the next time I go for an interview.  I chose to go to this workshop because I wanted to improve my interviewing skills, as interviews are a vital aspect of getting a job.  I took the workshop out of my comfort zone by rehearsing part of an interview with another person.  The workshop met my expectations, being that I feel much more prepared for an interview now.  This workshop taught me the essentials on how to prepare for an interview, including attire, what to say and how to say it.  I learned a lot from this experience and I would recommend  the workshop to others because it serves as a great guide to interviewing.

Resume Writing & Cover Letters (10/27/09)

I went to this workshop on Tuesday. It covered the services that the Career Center offers, and was also very helpful in showing the correct way to write our resumes. The handout they gave us was also useful since it pointed out the specifics of what to include, how to format resumes, and even how to write cover letters and thank you letters. The woman who presented the workshop added practical tips as well, such as what to do during an interview when we are told to wait (e.g., fidgeting is a no-no) or how to apply to jobs online through the Starr Search website.

Overall, I thought that it was a good workshop that offered information that I probably would not have found elsewhere. I recommend it to anyone who wants to write or edit their own resumes.

What’s the point of registering?????

okay i am sorry i don’t wanna be mean or anything but today the whole career planning workshop thing really pissed me off. i don’t get what the point of the whole registering thing was if i was just going to end up being told to leave. and I wasn’t even that late; just one minute-_-.and it’s not like they had already started..so the issue was obviously that there were no more seats which REALLY bothers me because there should be enough seats for the people that registered.

so i was really disappointed and i just had to express it here-_-

Internship Workshop

This workshop was probably the most interesting workshop I’ve participated in so far. The Internship Coordinator was very informative of how to find and apply for internships. I learned about many different organizations that help students find internships in big name companies such as JP Morgan Chase, the big four accounting firms, Citi Group, and many others. This is a great workshop and I would recommend it to anyone who plans on getting a good job in the future.

Club Fair (09/24/09)

WOOHOO! this is my first post.
I have been holding off this whole blogging process but finally decided to take some time and do it (:
So I remember club fair to be pretty interesting. There were so many types of clubs as well as so many people that I’ve never seen. I have already joined KCC which is a Korean Christian club. I like how this club allows me to keep in touch with my religious side as I am going to school.

I had to look past my comfort zone and try to explore other clubs. Although I failed to completely look past my usual interest in religion, I did experience the many faces of Baruch college. I definitely recommend this workshop to other freshmen students who are interested in learning about the Baruch community.

Database Survival 10/15/09

This workshop was pretty helpful because I never knew about the Baruch Database up until now. It serves as a good replacement for google because it uses verified and acceptable sources for information. The guy who was explaining everything showed us how to search specific databases and how to conduct our searches to get the best results. I will probably be using this engine a lot for my papers since it’s not exactly easier to use than google, but it’s a better source and it’s more efficient in various ways.
