Create Your Own Major

On December 3 i went to star career development center to learn about how to create your own major that will satisfy your academic life. The main speaker was kind of mean because in the begining she said she would not sign the planner because she wanted people to stay there that wanted to learn about the whole thing. But in the end she said she lied about it and put a stamp in my planner. We had 4 previous Baruch students who came to speak about their life as Baruch students and how all of them created their own majors to satisfy their needs. It was really interesting how it could take as little as 1 month to do it and as long as 6 months for the others. I also found out that you have to run around and push your self because no one else will do it for you. I learned a lot but i dont think im going to use this information mainly because i already know what i want to do and what major i want to have which is acounting. In the end this is probably one of the best workshops that i went to in this semester.

Freshmen Seminar

So on September 17 i went to a freshmen seminar. Thank god i got there early because line afterward was so huge and big that no one could squeeze in even if they pushed. Basically they talked about the same things which we learned during the semester of our freshmen class. The information that they gave was useful because i used later on as i was picking my classes. I am also glad that it was only 5 minutes otherwise i would have died. So it was a rather satisfying experience and im glad there were refreshments that they served us.

Mercedes Matters Gallery

On December 1st, 2009, I attended the Mercedes Matters Gallery Tour in the Sydney Mishkin Gallery on 23rd street. The tour guide took us through various rooms where some of Mercedes Matters’ artwork was displayed. Although they were quite abstract, each painting provided its own sense of deep emotion. Most of the paintings looked very similar at first but as the tour went on I began to notice slight differences in them with respect to the period of her life. The tour itself wasn’t very intriguing however. The guide did nothing to make the tour any more exciting but did provide some insightful information on the life of Mercedes Matters. Overall, it wasn’t as bad as I expected.

Basic Interviewing

On November 12th, 2009 I went to the basic interviewing skills workshop. The goal of the workshop was to teach us how to properly prepare for and conduct a successful interview. The speaker was an advisor from Baruch’s STARR Center. She had a lot of personal experience with conducting interviews and I found her to be very insightful on the subject. She explained such things as how to dress, what to prepare to say beforehand, and how to act during the actual interview. She let us know that at the STARR Career Development Center we could find all of the support that we need. Overall, the workshop was helpful and the speaker informed us about how to behave  in an interview but it was a pretty boring lecture.

Coloring of your future

i forgot when i went to this global community awarness workshop but yea. Basically i kinda fell asleep but i remember some stuff 😡

The person speaking was a gay politician who struggled in life to get where he is now. This is because he finally opened himself to the world that he was gay and also because of his race. Everyone was being racist to him. Even though he was gay, he pushed himself and strived for his goals. He had an internship in the white house and had a job at MTV. I dont know where he works now so yea. He also mentioned how us people today think of gay people as guys wearing all girly clothes but in reality they don’t. They dress like how normal people should dress. I think this workshop is okayish but i dont think i would recommend it because this workshop didnt really help us with anything. It just basically told us how you shouldnt stop striving for your goals no matter who you are but i think everybody should know that by now. If they dont then, oh wells xP

Mercedes Matters

I attended a workshop called Mercedes Matters. Her artwork was broken down into three periods, her early life, middle, and late. We had to walk into each room which described different parts of her life. As she got older, her work became more abstract and complex. The workshop was okay, but we really didn’t have that much time to really see her pictures, and the lady talked a little too much. The workshop over all was okay. Personally I am not that interested in abstract paintings, but I guess it allowed to open my opinions to other things. I didn’t like how we had to wait online for the other group to finish before I had a chance to go in. I would recommend this to others because it was short, but I was kinda bored, the only thing that was really interesting about it was the artwork. However, I definitely want to attend another gallery in the future, but probably involving surrealism or still life.

BLOOD DRIVE WOOT!!!

when I went to the Blood Drive, Global Awareness Workshop, I thought that we would be donating blood and get cookies.

Turns out that they were talking why we should donate blood, and why are they requesting people to donate blood.

Well the workshop wasnt so bad……. except i got bored of it, but no biggy. The Workshop reminded me of a health class, but I would still recommend people to go.

Freshmen Reception

Oh Gosh, this was the most crowdest work shop i ever went through, the line was very horribly big.

If I were a freshmen once again I wouldnt go to this one, they serve nasty refreshments and all they did was sign peoples books for freshmen seminar. Also I would rather have went to another personal enrichment workshop, hopefully then it would have been a nicer experiance.

Ta~ Ta~

P.S

AND OMG WHY AM I DOING THIS IN THE LAST MIN?!?!?!??!

Basic Interviewing Techniques

In this workshop, they taught us basic interviewing techniques and what to do and what not to do when being interviewed.  For example, they taught us the 10 steps for someone to have a greater chance of getting hired.

Before an interview

  • research the corporation/organization
  • review your resume
  • practice answering potential interview questions
  • prepare a list of questions for the employer

the day of the interview

  • dress appropriately (men- suit, pants, shirt, shoes, ties and for women suit, skirt/pants, blouse/shirt, shoes)
  • manage your time

during the interview

  • follow the lead of the interview
  • determine the next step

After the interview

  • analyze the interview
  • follow up

They also taught us how to prepare a personal pitch because many people assume that they know a lot about themselves when being asked “tell me about yourself”. Truthfully they really don’t so that’s why it’s important to think about yourself specifically in the job/company giving you the interview. People should really think on a proper introduction when introducing themselves and say their strong points, personal skills, accomplishments, etc.  They also taught us how to give a proper firm handshake which i really thought it was unnecessary.

Over all this workshop was really helpful in preparing us in the future when applying for jobs, or when doing internships. With the 10 basic steps, its more likely for us to get hired.

Career Planning Workshop: Interviewing

This workshop was interesting at first but it started to become extremely boring as time went on. This workshop felt more like an announcement when I believe the purpose of this workshop would have been more effective  if there was more of a personal connection with interviewing. I would not recommend this particular workshop but I would definitely encourage others to look into any other interviewing activites. Interviewing skills will become necessary in the future. This workshop mentally made me leave my comfort zone where I came to really think about an official interview.
