Mercedes Matter Gallery thing

Okay i will be honest…i didn’t really enjoy this workshop( maybe because i was extremely tired and just wanted to sleep)…but i really had a hard time being interested in what the lady was talking about. Half of the stuff didn’t really make sense to me because I felt like i was hearing random words( like i said it might be because i needed to sleep)..I did catch some stuff..it was about an artist named Mercedes who started painting at a young age. The lady described how her artwork had changed over the years by becoming much more abstract. Although didn’t really understand the paintings or what message they were trying to send, I did like looking at two of them. they had a lot of crazy shapes and whatnot, and i thought it looked cool..

I also liked the part where we got to sit on the floor; it was really comfortable.

One thing that really bothered me was the fact that they said it would start at 1:00pm but they started letting people in almost half an hour later. I wasn’t late either…i went about 15 minutes early.

I don’t think i would recommend this workshop to anyone because i didn’t particularly enjoy it. i was pretty bored and only went to fulfill the requirements.

Art Gallery- Mercedes Matter

Today I went and checked out the Art Gallery for the works of Mercedes Matter at the building on 22nd street. First of all, I would like to mention that I never knew there was a building on 22nd street. Now about the gallery. After waiting for about fifteen minutes for the group before mine to be finished, I was finally allowed in. I found the gallery quite small, but pretty comforting. There was a guide who explained to the group much about Mercedes Matter and her art work. I found it rather true when the guide explained to us t

Mercedes Matter Gallery

So today on December 1 i visited the Mercedes Matter Gallery. I thought that it might be something interesting but i was in for a shock. When we came in we started the tour with the pictures she did when she was 6. Not only did we not understand what they were for there and it made us think that we were more creative at that age. As we moved on we saw her abstract version of still life. In fact it was so abstract that the tour guide couldnt tell where the table was or what type fuit was drawn there. We also saw a few painting that she had done with charkall that took her 2 years to make but in reality it looked she did it in 30 seconds and it was all abstract. In the very end there was only one painting that i liked which was a black and white picture of still life on the very end. It reminded me alot of modern day graffity even though it had no letters.  So in conclusion the whole gallery made you say one phrase which was “I Could have drawn that”.

“Coloring Up Your Future” 11/12

This was a workshop where a politician Alfonso Quiroz talked about his time being involved in the business and political world. During his presentation to us he talked about difficulties that he has encountered through people not always taking him seriously in politics and his career. I think that his main focus was to show us that it is okay to be who you are and not try to hide it just because you are being ridiculed for it. He talked about discrimination not only based on his sexual orientation but also for his Hispanic ethnicity.  I felt that this workshop was very interesting and he was able to get his points across because he was very confident and honest with us. I really enjoyed this workshop because I come from a Hispanic background as well and I am constantly told by my mother of all of the discrimination that is present in some workplaces. I hope to never encounter any myself, but if ever I will know to not be ashamed of who I am. I would definitely go on to recommend this workshop to other incoming freshmen because it gives you a different perspective on things and shows you some hidden truths about what you may or may not encounter in the future. 🙂

Academic Enrichment

This workshop was both complicated and useful.  The database survival workshop was the steps and guides to learning how to use baruch’s library’s database.  Their database consisted of finding everything from a news article to books on many different topics.  The researcher went through search, advanced search and how to dumb down the process of searching for research articles.  I learned that scholar articles are a good resource for research papers because they are checked by many experts on differnt topics.  Also Baruch’s archives are one to envy because their many different choices gives the student access to hundreds of books that are within the cuny library system.  Also, there is a phone number that gives you access to a 24 hour librarian that is always there to help.  I know many student would rather choose to google information for their research papers but once you get the hang of using Baruch’s library’s databse, you will find yourself finding the best research out there.  I would definitely recomment this workshop to everyone because it is a useful tool to be able to find accurate and credible information for college.  A day should be dedicated to learning how to use the baruch’s database in every english or freshman seminar class.

Career Planning: Impression Management

This workshop was, by far, the most interesting and most entertaining to me. The person giving the presentation kept everyone engaged by having interactive activities. He talked about the fact that everyday there is someone observing us, whether it’s a professor or a peer. The way you dress and act has a big impression on each individual around you. None of the stuff he talked about was new to me, but i still found it a lot more engaging than other workshops I went to.

So the main focus of the whole workshop was how to make good impressions on people. He talked about different ways that leave impression on people such as the clothing you wear, the way you talk to people; pretty much the way you present yourself to others. He pointed out that this was the reason why they ask students to dress professionally during career fairs.

He also spoke about showing up to class late on the first day, which can give bad impressions on professors. It gives the impression that you’re lazy and don’t care.

Even though i understood the workshop and the point he was making, I kept on getting confused with the way he was making those points. He was just asking so many questions about all these things like how many people we knew and how we met them. It just really confused me because i had a hard time relating it to making impressions; maybe I’m just slow lol.

But i still liked this workshop and I would definitely recommend it to other students who want to fulfill the requirements. You may not learn all that much, but I was able to stay awake in the workshop unlike a lot the other ones I went to.

Basic Interviewing Techniques

10/29/09   There was a workshop that covered what to do and what not to do when interviewing for a job. Most of the stuff they covered, I knew beforehand. Dressing formally. Posture, researching company background. What to say, what not to say. How to shake someone’s hand. Facebook/Myspace problems that might occur with your potential employer. These were all information i knew. What was helpful was planning answers to tricky questions before hand. it isn’t uncommon for them to ask “What do you think is your worse trait?” helps to be prepared, and it’s really hard to talk about yourself truthfully sometimes.

Freshman Reception

Like i mentioned in my previous post – Club Fair- I haven’t been keeping up with my blogging so this workshop was from way back. 9/14/09. This was was the personal enrichment workshop, the freshman reception. They weren’t kidding when they called in the freshman reception. Nearly the whole freshman group turned out for this event as well. The location was at the center for orientation and academic advisement on the fifth floor. It was a long wait since the line reached all the way past the elevators. When it was finally my turn in, I tried out the lemonade they were offering. It was simply horrible. It had a fake taste to it. The cookies were godsend though. Although i couldn’t ask too many questions because the advisors were swamped. i received a folder full of information we should know. It was very helpful. All i can say is that they could have done better with the planning.

Club Fair

Hi all. I know i have been neglecting my blogging but I am attending the workshops! Now this one is about the club fair way back 9/24/09. There were a variety of clubs that interested me. Most of the clubs had to do with personal interest and the free food… Ice cream and fried dumplings!? Not a good mix but hey it’s free. So I looked around for a while but most of the time it was to get myself through the crowd. I think the whole freshman population turned out that day. After looking at several clubs i decided to join the Archery club! They welcomed beginners and I have always wanted to shoot a bow and arrow like robin hood did. Surprisingly enough, it was harder than i expected but an overall fun experience.  The club fair might have been crowded, loud, and hot, but still what’s a school without clubs? Go club fair!

Coloring up your future

I attended a global-community awareness workshop on November 12. I believe that the workshop meant to focus on a gay politician Alfonso Quiroz and the struggles hes faced due to be openly gay.  However, he instead talked about his life and the problems hes faced due to his nationality and being openly gay. He was very confident and was very interesting. He told us about his interning at the white house and working at MTV.  He also shined a new light on being gay. He said that most people think that gay men wear feather boas and glitter, however most do not. He also briefly talked about how he told his parents and his friends. Overall it was a very interesting workshop and helped me see another way to the gay issue. I would definitely recommend this workshop. It was informative without dragging it out.
