Your Life Your Money

I attended the Your Life Your Money student life workshop on November 11 from 6 to 8 pm in room 1-107.  This was a very informative workshop, as it discussed many important aspects about handling money as a student, as a young adult, and as an individual in general.  After a brief introduction, we watched a film which was about an hour long.  The film showed a few different individuals and how they were handling their money.  One guy was a young college graduate living alone in Chicago, and he was somewhat frugal about handling his funds and very organized.  He was doing well.  Another example was a college student in Florida who was in ridiculous credit card debt.  This discussed some issues of using credit cards.  Another example was a middle aged lady who was in a crisis, but recovered and is handling her funds well.  All three of these examples were excellent sources for learning how to handle funds.  After the film, there was an open panel for asking questions.  On the panel were the middle aged lady from the film, an author from a book used in the film (she was also in the film), and another financial specialist from HSBC bank (which sponsored the film and event).  Although I did not ask any questions, this question asking session was a great opportunity to learn about some of the situations people around me were in and the solutions, so I could avoid these myself and possibly use the solutions as a guide on how to handle money.  This workshop was a great opportunity for me to learn about handling my money and I would highly recommend it to another student.  It was not really out of my comfort zone, but it gave me crucial advice on how to stay financially in my comfort zone.

Coloring up your future

On Thrusday, November 12, I attended the global awareness workshop during club hours in room 2-125.  The name of this workshop is Coloring up you future.  During this workshop, politician and successful businessman Alfonso Quiroz discussed his political and workplace career.  While the original goal of the workshop was to discuss being openly gay in politics, Alfonso also spoke about other problems he has faced with ethnicity in politics and the workplace.  Alfonso gave us somewhat of a summary of his career since he was in high school and how he got into politics and public work.  Alfonso also discussed how he feels being a mix of multiple ethnicities has effected his career, as people of each of his ethnicities do not see him as dominantly anything, yet they often view him as trying to be something.  For example, he discussed how he is part Mexican, but he has often received somewhat of discrimination from Mexicans because he is not completely Mexican, yet he does establish himself as being part-Mexican.  The main point that Alfonso made throughout the workshop was that in order to live somewhat of a happy life, an individual must simply be what they are and not try to hide anything from his/her co-workers.  By this, Alfonso did not mean to broadcast oneself as being a certain sexuality or a certain ethnicity, yet not to pretend to be someone he/she is not in order to appease anyone.  This workshop was a little out of my comfort zone being that I am not gay, but I am glad that I attended it because Alfonso discussed greater aspects of careers than simply homosexuality.  I would recommend this workshop to another student because it is a great opportunity to learn about the importance of individuality within the workplace.

Club Fair

YEAH THIS IS MY LAST BLOG!!!! This workshop was the one on 9/24, where there was a huge Club Fair. I was a bit iffy about this, because I wanted to join Clubs in my Sophmore year and get a bit adjusted to Baruch. But since my friends were going, I went too. I had to admit, it wasnt one of the most anticipated workshops, because it was really really crowded in the gym. It was bearable, but I doubt that all the Club hosts anticipated alot of freshmen. During the Club Fair, there were lots of clubs, I think all of them. It was appealing, but I couldnt handle them. Then there was some food for us to eat which was good and we got to talk to our friends. I mean, I only applied to Student Government, and that is a good one I believe for a freshmen. Haha.

Library Workshop

I am really late with this blog, but I need to complete it. Haha. This was the one where we went to the library and we were seated down in front of a librarian and she taught us how to use the Baruch Library Website to locate research and help for anything we needed in our papers/reasearch/hw, etc. I thought that some of the resources were very helpful here. One was the Ask A Librarian, where you can click on the chat with a librarian and talk to a live librarian about any help you need and they can assist you on the spot. I like that alot. Another thing I really liked was the option where you can search a book outside of Baruch, but anywhere in CUNY. This you can do if you are too lazy or there is no book in the Baruch collection and you want to find the book elsewhere. I dont know why we had to write some of these facts on paper and give it to them, because we did get the basic idea of what the librarian needed to say. All in all, I would recommend this to people to learn more about the library site.

Community Global Awareness

This workshop was done to fulfill my career section. At first, it was frustrating a little because the room was way different and I thought that we wouldnt be able to attend it due to limited seating. We got the seats though. I was there with Agnes, Michael, Jeffrey and Brian. The workshop host was about a gay guy who was part of the LGBT community. In this, he talked about how he was turned gay at the age of 27 and before that, how he got an internship working under the administration of Bill Clinton. He said that it was one of the most memorable experiences ever because many people dont work with the President everyday. He talked about how hard his life was not because he was gay, but because people were being racist towards his ethnicity (he was Latino and German I believe). His main point, in the end, was the fact that whether you work in New York, or anywhere, people will always want to put you down so that they can succeed and they can push you back. He said that you have to ignore those people and always strive your best and reach to the top so that you can become successful.

Job and Internships Fair

This Career workshop really was insightful to me. It explained about the Club Fair that was taking place on Nov. 20. In this workshop, 2 guys came up on stage and talked to us about different tips, startegies and do’s/dont’s about the career fair and how to get a successful internship in general. I thought that both of them clearly explained what needed to be done and I learned new career tips.

As for the Job Fair itself, I was nervous at first. I hadnt prepared a mini-speech the night before and I was panicking, thinking that it would be crowded when I went there and that I wouldnt get the chance to be able to get my resume across the companies that I wanted to seek a job in. You had to dress up, but that wasnt a problem.  This was also my first time actually going to one, so that was another reason. On the contrary, it went way better than expected. The gym wasnt crowded at all, it was easy to find the companies that you wanted and there were no lines. I gave my resume to like 6 companies and it was a nice experience. I didnt get an internship because it was mostly for Soph. and up. Also they had summer internships, so I might get a chance then. This experience gave me more confidence and I would recommend this to everyone.

Arts at Baruch Gallery Tour – Mercedes Matter (11/17/2009)

My friends and actually decided to attend this workshop really early due to the fact that this was the last art workshop; this decision ended up to be a great idea because after us, so many people came. Each tour lasted about 15 minutes and only 25 of us were allowed to go in at a time.  We started off the tour looking at the early works of the artist then moved on to the artist’s more matured works. The art we saw were abstract and hard to understand. I just saw a bunch of pretty colors and triangles. It was hard to listen to the speaker because we were all very eager to leave.
I learned that an art department actually does exists in this college. I also learned that the works of artists’ mature over time. I don’t feel that this workshop really allowed us to participate with the subject matter I believe there could have been a better way to conduct this workshop.

Community Global Awareness – Coloring Up Your Future (11/12/2009)

At first, it was difficult to find this workshop because there was something wrong with the room number; however, I was really happy to find subway sandwiches and soda for everyone attending this workshop. While I was eating my sandwich, I could not stop listening to this speaker. Although I don’t remember his name, he was a great speaker. He was easy to understand and his concerns and thoughts about gays in the real world were true to our current time.
This workshop was definitely something that is not common therefore forced us to think outside of our comfort zone.  The speaker helped me try to understand the point of view of a gay man out to achieve his goals. I recommend this workshop for others who are willing to see a different side of gays today.

Stress And Anxiety

I attended this Personal Enrichment workshop thinking I had to just get it over with.  But after the workshop I realized that the tips they gave and exericises were actually helpful.  At the beginning of the Workshop we had to carefully and meditatively analyze a raisin.  This helped to increase relaxation and mindfulness.  Towards the second half of the workshop we learned how to organize decisions we make in our lifes through a method called DEARMAN.  This method allowed us to carefully analyze every element of a problem and how to fix it.  At the end of the workshop the researchers played a soothing bell while we closed our eyes and relaxed.  Through this meditation we was able to relax and relieve our body of any tension that we had.  This was a great workshop and I would definitely recommend this to students because college does get stressful.

Club Fair

Even though I attended the Club Fair a while back, I remember what happened like it was yesterday.  Before i walked into the gym i expected this Club Fair to be just like the Street Fair at the beginning of school.  It was completely different and crowded.  There was barely any room to move around.  During the Club Fair i walked around and collected free things from the clubs.  For example, I got a bag from the Apple Club, shot glass from The Ticker Club, and art books.  Besides the presentation of Clubs i was entertained by the performances they had and the costumes some clubs wore.  Alot of my friends joined clubs like NABA and VITA but i just played my part as a viewer so that I could join a club next year when i get settled into Baruch.  The Club fair was amazing and very informative.  I would definitely recomment the club fair to others who want to join a club or looking for information on clubs.  I cant wait for the next club fair so that I could join a club.
