Basic Interviewing Techniques; 10/29/09

This was a workshop that was set up to notify us what an interview is basically about.

  • We should dress properly; suggested that we should wear work clothes like a dress shirt and pants (no jeans or sneakers).
  • We should kow our strong points and our weaknesses.
  • Your expertises and what you expect out of this job you are applying to.
  • Also, why you want the job. But don’t overdo it like saying you want the money or to kill time.

So they demonstrated an interview by showing us what to do and what not to do. After they did that, they told us to practice interviewing with the people around us. I had a bit of a difficulty there because I have nothing I am good at, and no real job experiences. So this was really weird for me :[ This shows how unprepared I am in the business world. So! I’m thinking of going for an internship but I do not know in what field (undecided major). Internships require interviews too though. Scary.

But overall, this workshop brought out the basics of an interview with a live demostration and is great for unexperienced people like me :]

Library Workshop; 10/15/09

Basically in this workshop we were told of the databases that Baruch provided on their site. We could use these databases for research purposes. LexusNexus was one and the other database was EBSCO.

  • I have used EBSCO before for my Research&Technology class back in highschool so I knew how to search stuff up.

The person running the workshop showed us examples on how to research effectively and using little time. Quotations and prepositions help a lot on finding stuff that have the exact words so your search will have narrowed down to a few results. The more words you put in a quotation, the narrower the results will be.

  • This is really helpful in cases when a person has work or has no time to waste. They would not have to go through all the links resulting from a very broad term they looked up.

I didn’t really see the point of writing down something we have learned from this workshop on a piece of paper though, since we had to hand it in, but I do recommend this workshop to others since a majority have not used a database before and/or knew about the use of quotations in a search engine.

The Nature of Photography; 10/13/09

Upon attending arriving at the Sidney Mishkin gallery, I was like WOW, it was my first time entering this place. It looked nothing like the rest of Baruch.

  • I thought it was quite exciting to visit new areas at Baruch :D.

There was a line to enter the gallery. A group of 10 to 15 entered at a time. When we got in, we put our bags down and hurried to the gallery tour guide. She introduced herself and we began. I don’t recall the first art she brought us to but I do remember the one of the tundra, or whatever it was.

  • There were 2 frames of the same artwork but one art was modified so it had a blue texture, and the other one was in grayscale.
  • Then the guide spoke of how colors can change the mood of an artwork.
  • The blue one was resized to fit in a smaller frame. The blue texture made the things in the picture look like there were coated ina sheet of ice, like the world had stopped.
  • I think the other one was in grayscale, and was enlarged to see every little bit of detail.

The next one she showed us was of “sand dunes” but in reality, they were actually four butts laying diagonally on the streets. The angle and lighting decieved us D: Plus, we weren’t expecting a pictures of butts in a gallery.

Well I enjoy art, but not so much as to studying one and picking out pieces and explaining the point of it though. I understood the idea behind the shades of color but I did not know that enlarging one would generate such a different feeling as to looking at one that is smaller in size.

I guess I would recommend this workshop to other students because this world has colors. Learning the basics behind coloring would benefit them as a person in judgement and stuff. (:

L4D2!

Salutations Doods!

I recently bought Left4Dead2, its a fun zombie survival game where you are thrown with three other people to play with and survive. I am fond of playing with a Frying Pan as a weapon beating up zombies, and hearing the sound of a frying pan going POW! when my frying pan makes contact with a zombie. There’s a variety of weapons to choose from, and a variety of zombies you must face. Theres a large muscular zombie that looks like the HULK but its pinkish white called the Tank, so every now and then, I get my Frying Pan, become the IRON CHEF, and battle the muscular, built, robust, zombie that must have taken loads of Steriods. DD:

I learned one thing from the game. If you have a gernade launcher and fire it at point blank range, you will die on expert mode!

Carreer/Internship stuff

Hi there again! (= w =)y

When I attended this workshop, I expected the speaker to, talk about something I didn’t know, and rather stop stating the obvious. She did bring some good points like you got to act calm, be sharp, do not show that you are nervous. But I did question some of her thoughts such as looking “professional.” Just because you look and act “professional” doesnt mean you are going to be a professional, or be competent for the job. I think that people should stop trying to look like something they are not and be more casual. If I were an employer I wouldn’t be looking out for a person’s attire, but of social skills and academic skills.

P.S

I was eating Halal food while listening to her, chicken over rice is a very addicting meal to have, especially when you add lots and lots of hot sauce. (= w =)/ bye now!

Club Fair

(= w =)/

hi there! Going to a school event that is held by the school clubs was a really worthwhile moment, kind of. Even though i am still not in a club at Baruch, I find that the Club fair was still an interesting event especially, the Business Tax Club. I saw my friend in a suit, he in no way can look professional in my eyes for some reason, so I went up to him and spoke, asking about his club. He told me that the club favors more among business and accountancy and told me I should join. I got the brouchure~!

P.S

His club didn’t serve refreshments! DDDD:

Art Tour

It has been a jolly good day I must say, to visit the Art Gallery.

Althought I wouldn’t consider most of them masterpieces or worthwhile, I came to observe the paintings and photos. Most of the paintings are abstract, everything is from how the Artist “sees” things, his/her own interpretation, I was quite fond of the pictures of the bird’s eye view, while some other bystanders were amazed of a picture of some Racks and Rears….. Which I find weird but I guess it is still art(cough…cough)

Well it was a nice day too. (= w =)y

Library Tour

Oh, hello everyone!

The Baruch Library is an enriching place to go to, it has comfortable seats, and rollie wheelie chairs!

While at the Library I attended a workshop, where the instructor was teaching/informing us students on information of borrowing books, laptops and calculators. She even mentioned that we have a 100 USDs to waste on printing paper. We can even renew books online which I thinkis a nice feature to have. Although the library doesnt allow people to eat in there, I go to a private or one of those cubicle desks and eat there.(The bathroom works just as fine too.)

Later~ (= w =)y

Basic Interviewing @ 10/29/09

Time and Location: Room 1-107 Multipurpose Room at 12:50 – 2:20

As the title says, this workshop was about basic interviewing skills. The lady speaker began explaining a lot of things that we should all know about interviews. She spoke about resumes and explained what should be listed on them for certain jobs. She also explained how to search for jobs and companies.

The speaker mentioned that companies like to research their applicants. She mentioned that Facebook should be filtered and we should be careful of what we put on them. Companies search for applicants on Google and find things on Myspace, Face Book, Twitter and other sites that we may have forgotten about. However, information on oneself still lingers in the internet and we should Google ourselves to see what kind of negative or unprofessional things may be shown. Such examples may be inappropriate pictures from a party or vulgar comments sent to close friends.

This was really important because I realized I should not be so open on the internet. Once I got home, I immediately Googled myself and logged onto Facebook. I couldn’t find any bad things about me or any comments I left. As for my Facebook, I immediately filtered my privacy so only friends can see my comments, pictures  and videos. Although it would be bad if a company decided to add me then they might see any vulgar comments.

Another thing the speaker mentioned for interviews was that the interview itself starts the moment you enter the building of the company you’re trying to get employed in. She gave an anecdote saying that she was casually talking to a lady in the bathroom and later when she had the interview it was the same person. Therefore, the lesson of that story was to be wary of who you speak to once you’re inside the company building.

Overall, this workshop was very useful.

Arts @ Baruch 11/17/09

Time and Location: Mishkin building from 1:00 – 2:30

Well after exploring the arts of Baruch, I’m a bit unimpressed. This was the LAST arts workshop available at Baruch so I HAD to go to this one.

One thing I didn’t like was the long line to get in. They allowed the next 25 people in after every 25 minutes. Unfortunately for me, I was part of the last 25 people. I waited in line from 1:00 to 2:13 to get in and I rushed to class after.

What I learned at the workshop was okay. The name of the gallery was called “Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective.” Mercedes Matter was a female artist who was known for her still lives. As a child, her art was simple. In her teens, she started painting scenes without detail. As for her adulthood, she painted still lives on larger canvas. However, her still lives were different, they had lots of geometric shapes in them, mostly triangles. This offered a new angle on still lives because her paintings were not detailed, as said before, but instead blurry images of fruit. You could still make out what the paintings were but it was difficult.

The gallery-tour guide explained that when looking at art, one should not ask the question “what is it?” Instead the viewer should be asking “what is the artist trying to portray?” This is a good quote that I will always keep in mind when I look at other people’s work now. It’s a very good statement. Also, this gallery was a good example of demonstrating how people’s style and views change over a lifetime. The tour guide explained how at childhood, artists express themselves however they like. Later, artists start to think instead “This doesn’t look right.” They become t00 se-lf-conscious of their paintings and lose their original style.

Overall, this workshop helped me understand and like art more.
