Global-Community Awareness @ 11/12/09

Time and Location: 11/12/09 @ 12:30 – 2:30 Room 2-215

I enjoyed this workshop it was nice and simple: an anecdote wth free subways sandwiches !! Other than the free food, the story was nice. The speaker explained his life story to the audience in about 10 minutes perhaps and it was very interesting.

He used to be astraight C student in college, getting nothing but C’s. He applied to an internship to intern for the President and he got it !! He helped Al Gore, I think, with an election and traveled all across the nation. Later he quit and worked with MTV. Now he is working for ConEdison. His main point about his life is that he is gay, in sexual orientation, but it did not stop him from doing what he wanted.

He summarized the moral of his life to the audience saying that we should all be goal setters and strive for something. Don’t let anything stop you, even ifother may judge. People will always judge but just ignore them as he did.

I enjoyed the lecture because it showed me that een the average C student could do something as great as he did. Personally, I hate politics but what he did is pretty amazing. He also said he got to go to fancy dinners with the higher ups of government.

Personally I would love to be a professional dancer, choreographer, or a CGI animater for movies or games. But I have basic experience in all of them. I suppose I’ll just try my best a bit at a time.

The Nature of Landscape

I attended this workshop on Ocotber 13, 2009 at the Sydney Mishkin Gallery. As understood, the goal of the workshop was to perceive how many photographers viewed landscape, whether it be mountains, hills, planes, or people. During the workshop we saw many photographs of close-ups, aerial views, frozen landscapes, and silhouettes. This workshop did take me out of my comfort zone because I am not such of an artistic person, especially when it comes to photography. I had never expected that either forward or abstract art could be fascinating. It was interesting to see the different ways that photographers perceive nature. One of the pictures that I saw the most interesting was of 4 people lying on the streets of New York City naked with their butts up. However, the photographer did not perceive it as something offensive or indecent. Rather, the shape of the back and the butts of the 4 people were seen as hills and/or mountains. I thought it was a unique way of looking at nature. I would definitely recommend this workshop to anyone because it really makes you think about the way we see the earth and the nature of landscape through our daily lives.Ā I learned that you don’t have to be a professional photographer to take pictures of life, you just have to have imagination and the want to not see life just in a boring way, but as something creative and with your imagination, it can be whatever you want it to be. šŸ™‚

Club Fair

I attended this workshop on September 24, 2009. The goals of this workshop were to allow students to meet new people and join organizations that were of their interest(s). During the club fair, I went around to many of the clubs that I thought seemed interesting and I decided that I would meet the members of the club and if I was interested I would join. I knew that by joining a club, not only would it help me meet new people (as the shy person that I am), but it would also help me learn much more about the topic/idea/concept of the club. I went to the Best Buddies Club and I thought it was very generous and thoughtful for students to be friends with people with disabilities. I don’t think that those people have many friends because sadly sometimes others think that people with disabilities are not “good enough” or they are not “normal” to be friends. I think that it is a great way to interact with others in the community that need a special friend. I also went to the Latin Ballroom Group and I thought it was a great idea. I am Hispanic and I love to dance, no matter what kind of music it is. I saw this club as an opportunity to meet people while I did one of the few things that I love to do. many would think that there would only be Hispanics in the club, but actually there is a lot of diversity asĀ I saw the first time I went to a meeting. There were other clubs that I thought would be a great experience, such as the Women in Business, AISEC, the Billiards and Bowling Club, et al. This workshop did meet my expectations because I learned a lot more of each club before even going to a meeting. I would recommend another student to not just go to each club fair they can, but to go to the Student Life office and ask for a list of clubs and check out what they like. The thing that I learned from this workshop was that even though Baruch is a commuter school and everyone is busy getting home to do work, there is so much to do and all you need is to give yourself time and the opportunity to try something new. šŸ™‚

Building & Managing Relationships in College

IĀ attended this workshop on October 8, 2009 at 12:45 pm. The workshop was mainly about giving advice to students on how to build and maintain familial, friendly, romantic, and business relationships. The advisor of the workshope presented the overall view of when people maintain or lose relationships by presenting the psychologist Erik Erikson. Erikson said that when people are bewteen 18 and 35 years old, there is a battle between intimacy and isolation. Those who are able to affiliate easily and have a love for people are more easily accessible to build relationships with strangers. During the workshop, it was also described that family is theĀ base for building future relationships. It was said that college is a time when there are more adult roles and responsibilities and it is the point when students have to start negotiating adult responsibilities and boundaries as they are growing older. During the section of friendships, it was explained that as we enter college, we should not limit ourselves, be more open, and not just stick to our friendships from high school. Friendships in college are known to be long lasting and also help with newtorking after graduation. When it comes to business relationships, we shoule get out of our comfort zone and build relationships with our professors, internship supervisors, and professional colleagues because they are also an important part of networking when it comes to getting recommendations and finding jobs. The last section was romantic relationships. What was discussed was that it helps people with the development of communication between people, how to maintain “healthy” boundaries between our boyfriend/girlfriend/partner; it would helpĀ people know how to deal with breakups and not let it lead to a disaster.Ā Each romanticĀ relationship was said to show the progress of a person growing maturily. This workshop did go out of my comfort zone because I was exposed to meeting new people that were around me and I am a very shy person, so I don’t make friends so easily. I would recommend this to anyone else because I think most of us do not really know what the purpose/goals of our different relationships are and it would help us grow much better as a person. What I can take away from the workshop that was new to me was that relationships are not coincidence, they are there for a reason. They help us grow, learn, and help others to become better people to others and to ourselves. šŸ™‚

Blood Drive

I attended this workshop on October 6, 2009 and I had my appointment at 1:00 pm. This workshop was about helping the hospitals with the donation of blood. Today, there is an insufficient amount of blood that is available for patients that need it. the goal of the workshop as I understood it was to come together as a community-no matter where you were from, what gender you were, or what political view- to help donate the gift of life: blood. I selected this workshop because for the past 2 years,Ā I have been donating blood at my former high school and I feel that it is my little seed into helping this big world. I might be small and can’t change the world, but I hope to change someone’s life by allowing them to have my blood when they need it. The workshop did not take me out of my comfort zone because it has been something that I enjoy doing and something that I see as a responsibility. However, I was disappointed because I was denied toĀ donate blood because I am a little bit anemic, so my iron level is low. I would greatly recommend others to donate blood in the next blood drive because although some people might be a little nervous about blood, in the end you know you did it for a good cause. The thing that I learned from this workshop was not only seeing that the amount of people that are willing to help nowadays has increased but also that if you want to help others out, first you need to take care of yourself. The last time I had donated blood was in March and I was perfectly fine and in such little time, I became a little anemic. We can’t take things for granted and have to take care of ourselves. šŸ™‚

Student Services Fair 10/13/09

This workshop was created to inform students about all the services offered at Baruch. The goal was to inform students about all of the help we can receive from the school that we may not know about and may need in the future. I selected this workshop so I can learn more about the services available to me and other students. It took me out of my comfort zone because, once again, I am a very shy person and I do not really enjoy asking questions to people I do not know. My expectations were met because I learned about a lot of the services that are available to me at Baruch. I highly recommend it to other students because there are a handful of services that you will definitely need in your college career and they can help you. I learned a lot from this workshop, and the new thing I learned about was the Study Abroad Service. I plan to one day study in Europe and this helped to inform me exactly what I need to do in order to successfully study abroad. I was surprised that there are so many services available to us that I was not aware of.

Fresh Start 9/17/09

This workshop was designed for freshmen to better understand the requirements they need to complete in order to progress through Baruch. Many freshmen were confused as to what they needed to take in order to get into the particular school they wanted to be in at Baruch and this workshop helped us to better understand this. The goal was to let the freshmen know exactly what is expected of them academically and how they can be helped in the process. This workshop took me out of my comfort zone because I am really shy and do not like asking people questions about certain things and I often do not know what I am doing as a result of my shyness. My expectations were met because now I know exactly what I is expected of me and what I need to do to achieve the goals. I would definitely recommend this one to other students because it really is informative and lets us know what is expected of us. I learned exactly what I need to do to pursue a Political Science major, had i not attended I probably would not have known as a freshmen what I need to do. What I took from this workshop was that there is always someone to ask when you have an academic “path” question.

Adding Color to Your Life

I attended the Adding Color to Your Life workshop on November 12th. This workshop was designed for students to hear the story of an openly gay man who ran for public office. The goal of this workshop was to show that an openly gay person is just as qualified as a person who is not gay. I feel this workshop was very successful at achieving that goal. I selected this workshop because one day I may plan to run for public office. This took me out of my comfort zone because I am not gay and I do not frequently encounter gay people or know much about their struggle. The workshop met my expectations and I would recommend it to any type of student because it is very informative and interesting. What I learned from the workshop was that the man who was running for office was fit for the job and that being gay did not effect his work. What surprised me was that even though the man was so qualified for the job, he did not win a seat in public office. This workshop opened my mind and helped me understand some important social issues.

Student Services Fair

This fair was very helpful to me. I was able to speak with people from the SACC center about tutoring for math and they taught me how to sign up for a tutor. All of the staff at the fair was very friendly and made sure that I fully understood what their service would be able to provide to me. A few of the tables were giving out free stuff and that was cool also. Another service that I learned about was the health center, I think it is a really nice service to be provided to some students who may need it. I also talked to one of the athletic directors and he told me about the environment of the sporting events, how to check when there is an event coming up, and about all of the different sports that Baruch has to offer. Overall, I did enjoy this fair. It wasn’t too long but it still was very informative.

Career Workshop: Interviewing Skills

Well let’s see, this event was interesting but a little bit boring. I felt they were very basic with what they shared with us I would have possibly enjoyed a smaller setting with more interaction. The speaker did mention they do things like that in the career center though so that may be something that I consider in the future. I already knew most of this because Interviewing was my competition in DECA throughout high school. I suppose it was a nice refresher though. Out of all the workshops I’ve attended this was definitely not the most interesting and did drag on a bit as well. The most positive information I got out of it was definitely hearing about the resources with job searching and recorded mock interview that the career center offers.
