Interviewing Skills (11/12/09)

On Thursday November 12th, I attended the Career Exploration workshop. By far, this has probably been my favorite workshop. At this workshop, we watched a Powerpoint presentation about interviewing skills. I selected this particular workshop, honestly, because I needed to fulfill this requirement and I had nothing else to do that day. But I’m glad I chose this Career Exploration workshop in particular. This workshop didn’t necessarily take me out of my comfort zone because we didn’t have to interact with other students, we only watched Jennifer Rogers (who bears some resemblance to Tina Fey) give her presentation.

I would recommend this workshop to another student because it was very easy and all you had to do was fill out a survey. The attendance was very low for this workshop and to me, that made it less intimidating because the multipurpose room wasn’t quite full. I learned a few things from this workshop. For one, it had never occurred to me that there was so much reading material about companies; we were then shown how one can obtain the material that we should read before going on an interview- this was interesting to me. Also, I had always thought that when a man wears a black suit to an interview, it showed a sense of professionalism. However, this workshop taught me that it’s best for a man to not wear black suits and they should wear charcoal-colored or navy blue suits.

Every student should go to this workshop- it was fast, easy and very informative.

The Nature of Landscape Photography

This was a very nice freshman seminar. I am not a huge fan of art, but I still like to see them in different museums and want to interpret them on my own. It also gives me a clear picture as to what the artists who made them must have been like. The lady talked about the different pictures that were posted all around the gallery and how the artist wanted us to view it. It was also nice bumping into a few people from out group as well. We had a nice time thinking of what the pictures would look like, and we had a very “intriguing” debate on a specific picture. It was about a picture of few people that were laying down nude and we didnt know what it was. Then the lady told us and we all tried to distinguish how many people there were. Michael thought it was all women and so did I. I think a couple of people who shall not-be-named actually distinguished pimples on the butt-cheeks…which make me feel very akward. All in all, it was a fun and enjoyable experience and this was a very unique Seminar.

Career Exploration: Interviewing Skills

This workshop was extremely helpful because I learned a lot of things that i hadn’t known before about interviews. I did know majority of the stuff but there was also information that i didn’t.

Basically, the lady gave us tips/advice on how to have a successful interview. I learned about what employers look for while they’re interviewing you and the way you should dress. I had no idea that guys shouldn’t wear black to an interview because it looks like they’re going to funeral or prom, so I learned something new there. She also said that we shouldn’t wear clothing or even jewelry that distracts the interviewer. I also didn’t know that most of the impression that’s left on them is based on non-verbal contact which is why its important to present yourself in a professional manner. Having a firm(but not too firm) handshake is also important.

She talked about different sources we could use in order to find internships. She also put a lot of emphasis on doing research and knowing about a certain company before you go for an interview to show that you are interested. Your body language also says a lot about how interested you are in the job.

One thing i didn’t know that i learned was the fact that you should send a thank you letter after the interview. It’s pretty much common courtesy and shows the interviewer that you appreciate them taking out the time to interview you.

She also told us that after the interview, we should remember the important dates so that in case they forget to call, we can call them and ask what happened, whether the position was given to someone else or not.

I do recommend this interview to others especially if you’ve never been to an interview before. It really helps you understand what you should and shouldn’t do in an interview.

Freshman Reception in the Center for Academic Advisement

This workshop was quite a while back now, but I still haven’t blogged about it, so here goes.  This was the Freshman Reception in the Center for Academic Advisement on September 17 during club hours in 5-215.  This workshop was a great opportunity to speak with some advisers and get some common questions answered as I was still getting used to going to Baruch.  I spoke to an adviser about the courses I would be taking at Baruch, and how the declaration of my major plays into the whole scheme of the things.  Being that I’m still not sure what I am going to major, it was somewhat of a relief to be told I have a while until I must decide.  I would definitely recommend this workshop to another student because it is a great opportunity have any questions answered that will affect one’s success at Baruch.

Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective

I went to the Art Gallery tour of Mercedes Matter’s art on Tuesday November 3, from 1 to 3 pm.  The tour location was 135 East 22nd Street.  This was a very interesting experience for me, as I do not often go on art tours, but it was pretty awesome.  The tour started off with earlier work, including work from childhood, continued to later work.  The art was mostly still life work, but it got more complicated throughout the tour.  Much of the work focused on shapes and color.  This workshop was not necessarily outside my comfort zone, being that it was just a tour, but I was introduced to work that I have never seen before.  This workshop was a great introduction to a different type of art, and I would definitely recommend it to another student.

Managing Relationships in College

I went to the Personal Enrichment Workshop: Managing Relationships in College.  This workshop was on Thursday, October 8, 2009, from 12:45 to 2 pm.  This workshop was a useful workshop as it served as a guide to managing relationships during college.  The workshop emphasized the importance of networking throughout college.   The workshop discussed relationships with family members and parents, and how the dynamics of such relationships change throughout college.  The workshop also discussed personal relationships that are more serious, and their effect on schoolwork.  The major discussion point of the workshop was about networking and meeting people throughout college because networking is a very important aspect of getting a job after graduating.  I chose to go to this workshop because I realize that relationships in college are very important, especially at a new school where I do not know too many people.   The workshop was a little out of my comfort zone, as the lecturer made us talk to some random people around the room.   The workshop pretty much met my expectations, as I did learn a great deal about how to handle my relationships in college, and the importance of starting new relationships.  I would definitely recommend this workshop to another student because it is important for a college student to recognize the significance of networking.  This workshop served as a great introduction to the importance of relationships in college, and the lecturer also introduced us to some key websites that professionals use in the career world.  This experience was quite worthwhile.

Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective (11/3/09)

Last week I went to a gallery containing art by Mercedes Matter. The paintings were shown chronologically with the earliest being childhood drawings. Almost all were still life paintings portraying a table with fruit in bowls or piles, with the work getting more and more abstract as we moved through the gallery. By the time that we had gotten to the last painting, it was difficult to recognize the table and fruit. It looked instead like a mix of colors and triangles.

Our tour guide discussed the artist’s use of color and shapes, pointing out that each painting had its own color scheme. Each one was also dominated by triangular shapes. For example, the tables themselves were often painted as triangles, and were broken up into smaller triangles as well. What stood out to me was how she interpreted a simple still life of a tabletop in so many different ways. Even though many of the pieces were based on the same concept, they had different shapes and colors, and were unique.

I thought that the gallery was an interesting look into abstract art, and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in that kind of work.

Student Services 10/13/2009

Student Services was a type of fair where we had to go to a bunch of tables and learn all the different activities and things that Baruch offered.  This workshop I thought was very helpful. I got more information about the SACC center and that they allow you to have group help which would be very helpful for students who are struggling. I really didnt like the fact that they forced us to go to 10 different stations because I really wasn’t interested. Overall I would recommend it because as freshmen we really do not know what Baruch offers and this way we see what they offer.

Career Exploration: Interviews

I went to a career exploration workshop on October 29. The lady told what to do and not to do at an job interview. She gave very good points and advice however, I really didn’t learn anything new. I feel that it was pretty repetitive and I think some of it was common sense. I would recommend this to other students who don’t have previous knowledge of handling an interview.

Personal Enrichment Workshop (10/8/09)

This workshop started off really badly. It was really crowded and I got cursed out by some punk during my five minutes in the room.
I remember the instructor talking about issues regarding personal relationship relating to school and how to juggle your responsibilities while being involved in certain relationships.
We were told in the middle of the workshop to move around and talk to other people in the room. This exercise forced many of us to move out of our comfort zone and try something different. We were suppose to learn and understand the importance of networking.
This workshop helped me see that college is not just about studying but about the different people that make the college successful. I definitely saw the importance of networking and to always keep in mind the benefits of knowing the right people. I recommend this workshop to others who are fresh out of high school and new to the college world.
