Alright, you went through the application process, got accepted, and then went through orientation. Convocation was designed to be your first official welcome into Baruch College’s community. Please share your thoughts on how Freshman Convocation went. Maybe you can point out your favorite parts of the day and even what points of the agenda you looked forward to the least and why. And if you care to be a bit bolder, go on and share how your first week of classes went!!
START SHARING =}

Glad to hear that everyone enjoyed yourselves at this year’s Convocation; I’ll be sure to pass on your feedback to my supervisors and peers if they do not get a chance to read firsthand what you have commented or posted.
I like most of you guys enjoyed convocation. My favorite part was the icebreakers. Though I had met most you guys at orientation we didn’t really talk to each other so this presented and opportunity for us to open up and be more comfortable. The improvoholics show was hilarious that was probably one of the best parts of the day along with the tour of the neighborhood. Altogether, convocation made me feel like it was my welcome to the school and I belonged.
This is for Zainab and anyone else who expressed an interest in joining clubs:

For more information about clubs, pay specific attention to when CLUB HOURS are taking place; it should be Tuesdays from about 12:30-2:30pm. Other sources of information is the Student Life office located on the 2nd floor, bulletins posted in the hallways across the entire Newman Vertical Campus, also there are weekly emails from Carl Aylman about this weeks events at Baruch (so read through them please!!), or just walk into random club meetings or take flyers when they are being handed out. Also the Baruch CLUB FAIR will be on Thursday Sept. 24th which I encourage you all to attend.
I enjoyed convocation, (even though I was with the wrong LC the entire time and wasn’t really notified until much later). It definitely went far beyond just aquainting classmates and meeting peer mentors. We actually learned the history behind Baruch and were reassured that we made the right choice by coming here. The icebreakers were probably my favorite part as well because everyone was more or less required to speak and contribute to the conversation. I got to know a lot of people, made several friends, and was given a smooth transition into college life. One thing that’s been confusing about the first week of classes is extracurricular activities. It’s been difficult to find the meeting times and locations of clubs and workshops. A little more help with that would be nice.
I wasnt in the right group for the convocation, but I had fun with the group i was with. I think its important to have these “ice-breaking” activities because its harder to find friends in city universities because many people are commuters as oppose to schools with dorming where people can easily make friends. Convocation made me feel like i was a part of the Baruch community which has made the transition easier to do
Wow Janella…your the first person who actually admits liking the icebreaker; that was all Patti’s idea. It is called, “Cocktail Party.” I think that it was an interesting way for us to show the different personalities and interests of the freshmen.
Anam: I was also in the math summer immersion program prior to starting as a freshman. So I started college in July 2008 right after the 4th of July and I had Professor Ackrish for MTH 1030…at first it was dfficult but by the 2nd exam I was happy with my progress and my grades showed that. I understand what you said about feeling neglected. I attended the very last orientation last summer, it was right before our 2-day Convocation. But attending Freshman Convocation and meeting my peer mentor and instructor made it all worth it in the end.
I tried out for USG both semesters because I was Class President for the Class of 2008 for all 4 years at my high school. ITs different at Baruch….they take it more seriously and you’ll see why soon enough. Unfortunately because of the changes in my semester schedule I can’t participate this year but I can introduce you to those that I know, if that would help. Good luck with the rest of the clubs you are interested in.
p.s Thanks for those of you that have replies thus far…it shows that you taking your classes and education seriously and I honestly think that you all will do just fine.
After being in a math summer class and feeling completely ignored by Baruch, I was very thankful for Convocation. It was a nice way to meet our future classmates and it helped me open up to the cultures of Baruch.
Right now, I feel completely overwhelmed by the first week of classes. Just tonight, I realized how much work I have. There is so much reading to do! But I like how many of our professors want us to be active learners, what will all the online sites we have to visit. So far, my favorite class has to be Music 1003. I’m very passionate about music, and I’ve always loved classical but never really gave it much thought, and never I never had the knowledge to deconstruct it. I hope this class really tunes my ear to better appreciate the different aspects of music.
Oh, and I’m also really excited about clubs. I’m joining USG, WBMB, and UCLA. Can’t wait! I feel like my life is finally taking a direction far, far away from high school.
I actually liked convocation. My favorite part was the icebreakers. There, we had the chance to loosen up (especially for those who are extremely shy). The improvoholics was a lot of fun. I actually liked it a lot because I loved watching “Whose Line Is It Anyway.”
I hope that I fulfill all of my goals during this first semester at Baruch and that I dont fall behind with a lot of work.
See you in Freshmen Seminar, or in any other classes that we all share together!
Glad you guys enjoyed the tour…it was set up by Julien Marques, the Director of Orientation. It was a good idea, because some students do not realize that New York City is Baruch’s campus. Not just 4 or 5 buildings in the Flatiron District. I just wished I could have found a seat on a bench and people watch for a while.
I suspect, or I hope, that PSY 1001 will be you guys’ favorite class. I had it last semester with your professors, Albright and Sitt and they made the class very fun. The start time maybe a little bit later than you like but remember to utilize the break beforehand to attend enrichment workshops or to get some work done in the library or computer labs.
Thanks for commenting first guys! =)
Convocation was a lot more than I expected. The best part was walking around seeing the Baruch campus and what if offered and the neighboring food places.
The first week of classes went pretty good. I enjoy all of my professors and look forward to being a Baruch student and working toward my goals in the Business field.
I hope this semester doesn’t overload me with work. :\
I also enjoyed convocation. I was a little bit overwhelmed by the amount of people that were there, and I thought that I would not be able to find anyone to talk to, but by the end of the day I met some really nice people that I hope to be able to stay in contact with. The convocation was long in my opinion, I liked the short tour. The park was beautiful, and I also enjoyed the the improvaholics. The fair was a nice end to my day. I decided to leave at that time.
All in all it was a nice day
I’ll start. Even though convocation is a tad lengthy, I enjoyed meeting and greeting the incoming Class of 2013 especially my own students (or those who I was able to find). I enjoyed the Improvaholics show; I remember them from my Freshman Convocation a year ago and they really do an amazing job. I loved lunch and bonding with my fellow peer mentors. The day made me feel really apart of Baruch and it was good to see everyone after such a short summer….
Your turn!!
