USG Petition Drive

Apparently, this counted as a career workshop.  I helped supervise and rally support for the new Undergraduate Student Government constitution during club hours.  My duties included answering questions about the new form of the constitution, the amendments, how it affected the Baruch student body, and what USG has been doing this semester to help the student body get the most out of their college experience.  This drive helped me get promoted to the position of Director of Club Relations for USG and gave me the motivation to go ahead and put more responsibilities onto my plate.  I found this as a great way to challenge myself and was given the opportunity to hone my leadership, communication, and interviewing skills.

Sidney Mishkin Gallery

I visited the Sidney Mishkin gallery at Baruch’s Administrative Center.  Although most of the artwork there was modern (I am not a fan of modern and abstract art), I discovered a new genre called surrealism which grew on me.  Pioneers of this movement such as Man Ray and Max Ernst were featured and talked about.  I enjoyed this workshop because it was right up my alley and provided a cultural twist to my otherwise academic curriculum.

Psych Workshop

Last Thursday we attended a seminar taught by Dr. Erica Rosenberg who is a consultant for the show Lie To Me, which I am now hooked on. For the most part we went over  probably the same thing that we did in class right after the seminar. It always amazes me how someone can sometimes subconciously let their emotions seep through.

Lie to Me : Psi Chi

Two days ago we attended a psi chi meeting. Dr. Erica Rosenberg Ph.d lead the meeting. Her collegu Eckman and she works on Lie to me on fox. They are a psychology consultant for the show on the facial action coding system(facts). It can be used to tell when a person is being decptive. It was very interesting, and a lot to be learned.

My Presentation

It was different seeing myself presenting. I got to see the things that I otherwise wouldn’t have noticed. I think that my weakness during that presentation was that I was looking up sometimes and that I would sometimes say things a bit fast. My strong points were that I was prepared although I did glance at my paper a few times. During a future presentation, I think that I will improve on my eye movements and keeping eye contact with the audience and also not rushing what I have to say.

Oral Presentation

My presentation was about Mother Theresa. I made a mistake by writing an essay prompt to read from. I should have just talked briefly about her accomplishments and goals. But other then that I thought I did fairly well. My speech wasnt that clear at some points because I had to look to at my index cards. To improve my presentation, next time i will speak clearly and make eye contact with the class. Also, stand up straight and speak with a loud clear voice.

Video Presenation

I noticed that  I had a hard time standing still. I do remembering being nervous, but  I didn’t know that I had  so much hand gestures. I thought I could have done better. There were times when I would look up or pause whenever I didn’t know what to say. It was funny to see how my body expressed my level of nervousness. Whenever I was sure about something I moved less, and whenever I was unsure I couldn’t stand still. The video is very helpful. Now I know what to work on to better prepare myself for any other oral presentation.

Library Basics

This workshop just explained to us, many basic things about the library. We already learned the basics of the library with Jordan, so when I went to this workshop I was pretty well informed. The workshop was small. Only 7 or 8 people attended it, but they had sits for just a few people 10 at most. The people were helpful and unlike Fresh Start since this workshop was not crowded you were able to speak with the presenters. I had attended this seminar right after Fresh Start so it was a nice time to sit and relax, because the atmosphere was quite and comfortable.

Academic Enrichment Workshop

This workshop was designed for freshmen and its purpose was to help us make the right academic decisions during our time at Baruch.  Although the turnout was good (better than expected most likely), it did hinder the entire workshop.  We were asked to sign in and grab a portfolio of information pertaining to the workshop. Unfortunately though, I recieved more information from the portfolio than the workshop itself :(.

In-class Presentation

The link I recieved from Patty didn’t show me the video for some reason but I did recieve my scores.  I thought I did better than the grade reflected but then again, it’s difficult to predict success when you’re in the moment.  According to the grade, I need to work on my non-verbal communication, eye-contact, and “umm’s”.  I have to admit, I could have taken my time to speak slower as well.  If anything, this activity helped me realize what I lacked in presentation skills and will hopefully help me improve on my pitfalls.  I will try to slow down, speak clearly, practice more, maintain good posture, and make better eye contact whenever the next opportunity to speak publicly comes around.
